This is a repeat of a thread I started back in February for the last IHL meeting. We had just had the Grimes/Doty letters published in the HA, and discussion speculated about the upcoming actions of IHL. Below is my post bolded with additional comments at the bottom:
February Post:
Regarding the IHL conspiracy theory that has been discussed since this board (and the Fire Shelby Board) began; we need to look at possible outcomes of this Thursday’s IHL meeting. Any of the following scenarios or combinations of; confirm the conspiracy theory.
SFT is told to remove Grimes as Provost, SFT remains as President and no discussion is held about a new president’s search for USM
Crofts is dismissed by the IHL or submits his resignation due to “personal reasons”.
Items discussed in “executive session” for matters related to personnel give SFT tongue-lashing but result in no action by the IHL Board.
IHL appoints Crofts to “oversee” an SFT who is still President, with weekly visits to Southern Miss to monitor SACs compliance
IHL takes no action (publicly) but in “executive session” put’s mandates on SFT in order for him to remain President.
Klumb makes an announcement that SFT is being closely watched over the next few months to monitor SACs compliance/reports and "other" issues at Southern Miss.
Klumb makes an announcement following the IHL meeting that the issue has been resolved by SFT’s letter of apology and no further action is needed
Others point of view are welcomed but to (totally) disprove the conspiracy theory COMPLETELY the IHL Board would HAVE to:
1. Announce that SFT will not get an extension on his contract and announces immediate search for a new president to take office by July 2006.
2. Announce that SFT is being replaced as of Friday by Crofts as interim president
Additional comments this Monday evening 3/14/05:
Well another Thursday is coming up and the IHL is meeting up in Jackson. I predict the IHL will again, do nothing to SFT, giving us further evidence of the CONSPIRACY THEORY.............
I think you pretty much got it there at the end. You see, some on the IHL board and their crony friends in the Burg have too much invested in Thames. What a royal screw-up they all are. Again, I want to remind you what Fleming said in the newspapers about the board, when he had been criticized the day before by Klumb. Fleming said, simply, "This board is dysfunctional, and it needs to be fixed." That dysfunctional board got a dysfunctional president. Now the whole damned place is dysfunctional.

Given, the board is dysfunctional and we have a dysfunctional president, our campus is still in trouble. We need to think about SFT getting another four years and begin thinking also of exit strategies for our faculty.................
My guess would be that the report on the situation at USM by Crofts may take them awhile to digest. They have probably been hoping that SFT could pull the rabbit out of the hat but they may find out that ain't likely to happen. I'm really waiting to see how Crofts comes out of this meeting. I don't expect them to do anything about SFT yet. At this point, watching what happens to Crofts may give some clues to the future. I just hope the faculty treats Crofts like Typhoid Mary to avoid any hint that he has been "captured" by one side.
Worse case scenario: Crofts quits and Sullivan leaves on the next train.

see #2 above, Crofts is given his walking papers by IHL...........

Seems Shelby as kind and benevolent President is talking layoffs of over 100 faculty. Thanks for the exit strategy!
I wonder if the IHL Board feels it must wait for SFT's annual evaluation before making a decision. They need to give SFT his due process and base their decision on that. There were rumors that the Board wants to wait until May for the evaluation under new president Newton, since SFT’s last evaluation was under Klumb.
But this makes no difference for me and other faculty. We're leaving because we can't wait that late to learn SFT has 4 more years. Even if they tells us on Thursday there will be a search, that is still too late for many faculty who can leave or retire.

This could also have an impact on current searches. Candidates looking at USM may have second thoughts. In addition, our pool of candidates and those who will come to USM will be of lower quality...........We're not getting the "best" faculty for our students.

LeavingASAP, I also once thought that due process was a given at USM. Unfortunately, that is not the case. When I was USM administrator, I was informed point blank that USM administrators who are replaced have no appeals rights whatsoever. I learned very quickly that the term due process had no meaning at USM. I see you are leaving. Good luck. I wish that I had left when I first learned that USM does not play by customary and established rules.

Yes, Green Hornet, I also hear that searchers are not going well. Even in the CoST I hear they are having trouble with searches, which is surprising since that is the area SFT wants to build up.
I know one search that would go well, if only the IHL will give permission to start.

I heard that administrators serve at the pleasure of their superiors, errr...supervisors. I know it is a sad state of affairs. I hope you find an out and don't go down with the ship.
You can always hope that the IHL will finally realizes that even if SFT has good ideas, and is doing what they want, someone with management skills will get it done smoother and in shorter times if they would just start the search process.
No problem over here - we just hire our own graduates. We haven't taught them to be any smarter and figure out that they best leave. Of course, when they are ill prepared for the rest of the whirled.
