While Dr. Lares is an important scholar in her field, and would have a range of job options, I wonder what SFT's choices would be? He fires somebody and they go to TAMU or to Tulane, other people get disgusted and go to other Tier 1 & Tier 2 schools.
Where could SFT go? Who would have him? It's sad when you think about it.
We heard rumors wafting across the street that the is still an open position as Director of the Polymer Institute at USM. After a well-touted national search there were 0 (zero) applications to fill this whirled class position.....

Excellent question. For whatever it's worth (not much, I suspect), I hereby challenge Shelby to apply for jobs elsewhere. It might (MIGHT!!!) help humble him a little when he discovers that his inquires aren't even answered. And, if by some very odd set of circumstances he IS hired elsewhere, I promise to be there, helping to pack the boxes and load the U-Haul.
Seriously, what top company (let alone university) would hire a manager with this kind of track record?
Why doesn't he just accept the 50% average of his highest 4-years salary plus compounding COLA offered by PERS, plus his social security, PLUS the royalties he will certainly be able to enjoy from the "lucrative" sales of all the products he's developed over the past 40 years?
I agree with the poster who suggested that SFT send out a few resumés to see how many educational institutions would even interview him for a presidency.
regardless of what we are often told about the reputation of the polysci department, it has in fact been declining steadily for at least the last five years. Many of the genuine top schools consider the polysci department here now to be a second-rate entity. There are probably only 2-3 of the faculty who are nationally (maybe internationally) recognized (NB - SFT is NOT one of them). The inability to hire a Director with a national/international reputation clearly attests to this decline in status. Also, you only have to look at the recent faculty hires in the department to see they are struggling to attract decent folks - 2 of the recent hires got their PhDs in the polysci department here.
