Okay, folks, I know we've talked about boycotting businesses, etc. in response to what's been happening recently. But, if you are wary about participating in a boycott of any sort (for the various reasons that have been posted here), you might instead want to SUPPORT businesses that have gone out on a limb for the USM faculty. To me, chief among them is the Hattiesburg American. As our friend Robert Campbell has pointed out on more than one occasion, the American has done more than most small-town newspapers when it comes to thoughtful and insightful coverage of the crisis at USM. They haven't backed down from the real questions, and have brought to light many of the most recent issues (i.e. the CoB memo-gate, the documents surrounding SACS probation, etc.).
At last night's meeting, I believe that there was talk that has been reported about the American's "biased" coverage. This may possibly translate into these local business leaders boycotting the American. So, USM faculty should lead the charge in SUPPORTING the American...by buying subscriptions, advertising, etc. etc. The American's publisher Skippy Haik and executive editor John Broadbooks are to be commended for their support of investigative reporting on the USM crisis, especially recently. What other local news media outlet has been so brave?
Folks, show your support for the American however you deem fit (letters of support to the American, buying subscriptions, etc.), but please show it. The American deserves our help, especially at this crucial time.
