NEW VISTORS: Please Read!!
Permalink Closed

In anticipation of new visitors to the board (and as a response to other posters who have disdained the "tone" of this board), I'd like to post a quick primer to what this board is all about. I encourage other regular posters to add to this thread for newcomers (and correct me if I'm wrong on anything!).

First, welcome to the AAUP message board. You might want to first read some of the "sticky" threads at the top of this board. Included there are: a link to the old Fire Shelby message board (while in no way affiliated directly with this board, this is the place where many of us first started posting last year when the news first broke about the unprecedented firings of Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer), Babbs' Lists (self-created lists of current faculty/staff who are leaving/retiring from USM...there is an archived list from the last academic year and an ongoing list for this year), Contact Information for IHL Board members and other political figures, a Creme de la Creme accolades thread (to recognize those who help the cause), and most importantly, a message from Amy Young, USM AAUP president, describing the principles of this board.

In this message, Amy explains that the USM AAUP message board is a place for all to express their opinions and ideas--free speech for a free society. Since this is an ANONYMOUS message board, this means that anyone with a computer can come here, make up a Board Name (or multiple Board Names, if they choose) and post. Not all who post here are USM faculty members. There is no way of knowing exactly who posts here, but regular board posters have identified themselves as current USM faculty, staff, and students; USM alumni; former USM faculty or staff; concerned citizens of Hattiesburg and beyond; parents of USM students; concerned faculty from other universities, etc. We also have our fair share of posters (we call them "trolls") whose sole purpose is to disrupt the board by posting under other peoples' names (sometimes called "noms" on the board), posting offensive or threatening messages, posting multiple messages with the same information, etc. Please keep this in mind when trying to characterize the "tone" of this board...it is like the Wild West...we are self-policing, at best.

We recommend that if you don't like a certain post, the best course of action is to NOT CLICK ON THE TOPIC and to REFRAIN FROM POSTING TO THE THREAD. This will eventually cause the thread to move to the 2nd page, where most people will not read it and will eventually forget about it. This has been the most effective way to deal with "trolls" that we have found.

While this board has a decidedly anti-SFT slant, we welcome those who support SFT especially if they are able to give rational, concrete reasons why they support him. But, do understand that most people are here because they want to get rid of SFT. If you don't like this slant, then I suggest you start your own message board. Again, you are free to post here regardless of your feelings about SFT, just know that you have been warned that you will be in the minority.

This community has been built over the past year, and it is a very strong one. We have lots of insider jokes and terminology, but please feel free to ask if you don't understand something. As long as you ask in good faith, someone is bound to answer your query thoughtfully.

Welcome to the board, and hold onto your hat...it's bound to be a bumpy (but always enjoyable and highly addictive!) ride!

Truth (aka Andrea Hewitt, USM alum, former USM staff member, and current USM doctoral student)

Thanks, Advocate. I want other regular board posters to add to this thread. I've read good posts welcoming the anticipated new visitors, but wanted to consolidate them all into one thread. Hopefully, we can cross-post some of the other ones.

Web Master, can you help us out?

A couple of points here:

  • When something is pinned at the top of the page, I tend to ignore it.  However, new posters may not do this.  Pin with care.

  • I personally feel that the business community at large is intelligent enough to detect a snow job when they see one.  Heck, if I had received an invitiation, I would have gone just to see what they had to say.

I agree about the pinned posts sometimes getting ignored....what do others think?

I ignore them now, but I didn't when I first came here, I usually read the top stuff first.

Thanks for this well-written notice, Truth.

I think we have become too pin-heavy at the top as it is.  It is easy enough to keep this kicked forward as long as it stays relevant.  Another option would be to consolidate this welcome to new visitors with Amy Young's message about the board in general.

Remember, there is still an AAUP website front page with a good deal of background information as well as links to daily articles from a variety of media sources that mention Shelby Thames.

A concern is that new visitors to the board might not get past the half page of pinned messages on a casual visit.

Your post would have been absolutely perfect if it did not have this one simple line above.

You should not be calling anyone a troll. In fact, including this one sentence invalidates your whole post. You yourself have posted multiple messages with the same info. Does that make you a troll then? Several of your friends, including RC, have done this too.

Also, it is doubtful the new posters will go back and read all the messages from months or even weeks ago. Some will probably not even know how. I myself did not realize there was more than one page on this website until someone emailed me and told me. There was alot of info I did not have until I went back and read almost every page on this board.  So having some messages reposted so the whole story is told is not bad, especially when the subject line clearly says "repost."

Here is a good example why:  There were two posters here recently who said that the Alumni Association has been too quite and did not get involved in the Thames/faculty fiasco. In fact, there have been numerous posts here from alumni, and there have been HA and CL letters from alumni and the Association that have been linked to from pages on this board. The current and past president of the Alumni Association have posted here.  But not many people are going to go back---like I did---and read the 70 - 80 pages on this board to find posts from the Alumni Association.

I am asking you to re-edit your post and delete the one line that accuses people of "disrupting" the board. If this board has only a "slant," as you call it, then there can be no disrupting. If you use the word "troll" for some people, then it is more than a slant that is present here.

I agree....web Master, ignore the request to pin.

I stand by my post.  People can read your opinion about it if they wish.  Furthermore, I'm not about to get into a "shouting match" with you, Albert.  We can agree to disagree about this.  'Nuf said.

I wasn't shouting at you. It was a simple request. One that has apparently been denied. But....

You should repost your message from time to time so new posters can see it. If you do that, they will not see my reply. I actually like the post except for that one line, and I am even stating that you should repost it from time to time.

That was not disagreement.

I meant "shouting match" metaphorically.  Thanks for your agreement.

So, "the USM AAUP message board is a place for all to express their opinions and ideas--free speech for a free society." but "if you (I) don't like a certain post, the best course of action is to NOT CLICK ON THE TOPIC and to REFRAIN FROM POSTING TO THE THREAD."  After all these years I finally see how freedom of speech actually works.

BTW, thanks for naming a beer after me.

What's "unfree" about suggesting that if you don't like a post, just don't look at it or reply to it? That's as opposed to asking the webmaster to remove it.
Albert, you don't read very carefully sometimes.

Yep, that's EXACTLY how it works, Sam.  You need to quit hitting the bottle and start hitting the books, dude.

Truth, I just noticed a spelling error in your topic title...it's "Visitors."  I suppose we will have to take away your 1978 Hattiesburg Public Schools city-wide Spelling Bee championship plaque for this...tsk, tsk!
