Is the good ol' boy system still at play at USM and in Hattiesburg? Shelby is a native of Hattiesburg, attended grade school, high school, and college locally. He has a lot of connections and friends in the community. Connections to apartment complexes, friends in the paving industry, construction industry, and more. The majority of faculty members did not grow up in Hattiesburg and are considered outsiders by some members of the community. However, these faculty are a part of the community now, paying taxes to the city and state, and supporting local businesses.
How many other university presidents have never left their home community?
Thames wants to keep his friends and business connections happy in order to keep his job.
Do you wonder what company is handling the paving project by the Owings-McQuagge building, and why is it taking three (or more) months to complete?
Why do you think so many in the business community support Thames? It's because he supports their pocketbooks. It would behove many in the community to show up tomorrow and pledge support to the person who makes sure they maintain USM economic development of their businesses.
Been watching this a long time. Also been working--not anonymously either--but won't post under my name in order to protect friends and sources of information. Am a long way off but have a lot of friends still there in town and at the university.
For the town people, two things are at work. Some simply don't understand. They tend to believe authority, and SFT is the person with authority. For others (Nicholson, for example), it is money and prestige. There is no telling how convoluted the Hattiesburg money trail is. Then there are those that don't have direct (or indirect) business deallings with SFT and the university. Many of them support football/basketball, etc. We've all been around athletics enough to know that lots of those alums believe that they bask in the reflected glory of a winning football team. "It is powerful; so am I."
For Shelby, money certainly is at play here. But never forget that this is a very, very mean man. Money and power allow him to get back at all the people who have slighted him and his in the past. I've been told this story by three different people--one gownie and two townies. One of Shelby's supporters (from the old fine arts program--this person is now working for SFT) says that he (Shelby) never goes to wound. He always goes for the kill. He's going for the kill now--the faculty kill.
MY daddy is the sweetest man in the world. You know, I once climbed up in a deerstand with him and sat with him on an early Saturday morning. Okay, so maybe he was looking to kill a deer, but he'd never kill anyone dear to him. Who's dear to him? Well those who respect him. That's an awful lot of people. People respect me too. If they don't I set out to ruin them because that is what is best for me. And, Daddy agrees. We have to consider what is best for us - and if our people are making us happy then there is no problem. I can call faculty meetings on the last day of December for the following Monday before MY people have to contractually be back, but I can do that. Don't you see? My daddy can have Uncle Carl print "facts" out in the paper because if we've said it enough it becomes TRUE.
Since I have no practical experience in education, I can't wait to profit from economic development and teach it to all of the children in the K - 12 area schools. All the area schools love me and my daddy too. Just ask us.

Prima Dana:
I checked into the issue of whether it was legal to call in faculty that Monday. Indeed it is. However, most would agree that this is real bad form. I noticed on the USM calendar that Spring Break says for students only. I checked into that too. Apparently, faculty can technically be expected to be in their offices next week, but no chair that I know of is cruel enough to do this. I'm waiting to see if the CISE sweatshop is going to be open for business next week.
Please cut and paste out of the Faculty Handbook where the contractual law can be broken. I know of a chair who will change the Spring Break schedule for faculty immediately if it means she has that petty kind of control of their lives. If she controls, they nod their collective heads (HELLO DANA) while they continue to find her despicable.

This was checked out with HR and the IHL by several folks. 9 month faculty technically are entitled to take off only legal holidays and periods when all offices are closed (that's the contractual law). I'll bet 99% of the faculty don't know this. Offices are open next week and it is not a legal holiday. Hope to all CISE people hard at work on campus next week, smilin' away.

But now we have to define "take off". Faculty work in many locations and on weekends. We don't punch a clock. So are faculty not working if they never set foot on campus during spring break? So it may be the law, but how do you apply it to people that work with their minds?
I wrote the paper that got accepted by a fabulous journal (and probably got me out of USM) in a local coffee shop. Besides, my office was in one of those environmentally hazardous buildings, and I was sick for months whenever I spent anytime there. If they had made me stay there 8-5 I would have had to get Kim Chaze and sue them.
So . . . everyone, off to Javawerks! The amount of caffeine I imbibe is directly related to the amount I publish.

Very true. But many faculty do not do squat over spring break (much less during the year). We still have enough deadwood at USM to build a large log cabin, and these folks are the ones that make the rest of us look bad to outsiders.
