Mr. Klumb hit the nail on the head when he told the Hattiesburg American reporter that there just isn't the financial support out there from taxpayers to have 1950's style liberal arts universities in Mississippi.  Even if there was, I would not support such a system of schools and I don't think most others outside of the "university community" would either.  I have seen the silly phrase "community of scholars" on this board numerous times --- we can't support your lifestyle any more, and it is time you realize that.

I want to address some other issues.  Any skirmishing involving a temporary office site for me goes on without my knowledge or consent.  As far as I've been told, my new office will be in the new International Building.  I am still to report to Dr. Moore.  I will not have a formal teaching "load", but will divide my duties between classroom speaking engagements and off-site fundraising.  The division is yet to be determined, but I will work that out with Dr. Grimes after the first of May.

There has been discussion of committee assignments for me, but nothing is final.  I heard of the existence of a committee to formalize tenure requirements, and I asked Dr. Moore to be placed on that committee.  She told me then that there should not be any problem with that.  I hope to join the work of that committee because I have some definite ideas about tenure that I want to put forward.

The rumor production on campus is about the only kind of production that seems to be coming out of the arts and letters.  The unrest there, over mostly nothing, is troubling.

MR. Johnson,

I asked the USM PR department to send me a photo of you so I could verify your existence.  Below is what I received; can you confirm or deny that this is you?  (I'm not sure why thy labeled it as they did; is that by chance your nickname?)

When I worked at another university we had a worthless faculty member who was seldom in his office. He invariably told the departmental secretary to tell anyone who came to his office, or asked for him on the phone, that he was "at the library" of another nearby university. A new department chair put a stop to that nonsense fast enough. I'll bet that the imaginary Dr. Johnson will be spending lots of time "at the library."

Would you be so kind as to furnish a copy of the job announcement under which you were hired? Also, I want to know what your salary is.
I'm not USM faculty, I'm a Mississippi taxpayer and I have a right to know. If you have been hired into a foundation-funded or grant-funded position, I have a right to know that, even if you don't have to tell me the salary. If you can designate which administrators sit on which committees, I REALLY have a right to know about that.

I'm waiting.

Mr. Johnson, please confirm or deny something I heard about you this morning.  I was told that within a few weeks after your arrival, you and your wife will be making a sizable contribution to USM.  The central admin will then be able to say to constituencies that if they had more control over the hiring reigns, more "hires" like you could be made.  Thus, they will be able to kill several birds with each hiring stone (get contributions out of people and have more friends/less foes on campus teaching courses).

What do you say, Mr. Johnson?

Good Lord, is he Dr. Johnson now?  He must have begun and completed USM's intensive 72 hour on-line doctoral program in Economic Development since last Friday.  No small wonder he was offered tenure and a full professorship right out of the gate.

LVN, we have never met, but you do impress me as a very nice person. You have not strurck me as being a gullible person. Don't you suspect that another poster with a fertile imagination and sense of humor is pulling Mr. Johnson's strings?

I did not fall off the turnip truck.

One takes the opportunities one is handed to say what is needed.

Someone reminded us all yesterday that the hiring of General Blount looks every bit as hoaxy as this does on paper, only the General Blount story is true.  It won't amaze me when we get here for Summer school to actually see a W.J. Johnson moving around campus.  The Johnson hire didn't make the papers probably because he didn't lead an army across the Iraqi desert before joining USM's faculty ranks.

They already do this in economic and workforce development, don't they?

So how much do you think it costs, in today's market, to buy a faculty position at USM?  If the contribution is substantial, might one also have his name on a building, or a campus street? Should we prepare to see W.J. Johnson Drive, or the re-naming of Joseph Greene Hall to Johnson Hall?  Or how about the W. J. Johnson School of Economic Development?  This presents some interesting possibilities.  The Jimmy Buffet School of Music.  Brett Favre Stadium.  Or how about the Bernie Ebbers Professorship in Creative Accounting?

I have it on good authority that Mr. Johnson is a faculty member from Mississippi State that has been hired by the IHL Board to disrupt this message board. Mr. Johnson, actually Dr. Johnson, is in the College Of Agriculture And Life Sciences and teaches a course in the Agricultural Pest Management Major. However, I am not sure whether the FLIT management boys can take him out. Since he is an expert in the field he may have many defenses.

There is a W. Johnson at MSU but he's not the one

"All the excitement is caused by our being included in the 1996 Guinness Book of Records for having the highest number of college graduates in a family (14). We are humbled by the sacrifices of our beloved parents, Robert J. and Ella Lorean Marshall Johnson, and pay homage to their memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the dream. Our parents always said "Education makes you free". From Earth to Heaven...Thanks."

This is a quotation from the homepage of a real Dr. W. Johnson at MSU. Not in Ag, btw. He is one of a famous family who have been featured on national TV, as some others of you may recall.
His doctorate is from Minnesota, and he lives in Starkville.
Sorry, Cossack. I appreciate the joke, but I thought this man's real information was worth posting.

What happened to the big Sun Herald Op-Ed piece concerning USM that "Professor Johnson" allegedly authored?  According to him, its publication was imminent  two weeks ago.

LVN, you are right that this gentlemen's credentials should be posted. In no way would I want folks to think that I had confused the two. I must confess that State was selected since they were the only ones I came across with a pest management course and I needed to get the FLIT issue in the mix

Does anyone else find it interesting that we can't afford a "1950's style of liberal arts university" in Mississippi, but we can afford to run a university like they managed business in the 1950's? I would be interested in an analysis of the "business model" that is supposedly the new way the university is being run and, most particularly, a concrete analysis of the management styles of the "usual suspects." Anyone in CoB feel like taking on the task?
