Just in on CNN....President Elizabeth Hoffman has just announced her resignation from U of Colorado. Remember, this is the univ. where Ward Churchill teaches. Her reason for resignation? So that the university can move toward healing. What a gal! Do you think Papa Shelboo could take a page from her book???

Uh oh.  I could be next.  Could someone help me  get in touch with Professor Ken Malone?  I now have a renewed interest in the full professorship he offered me last year. I don't know anything about economic development.  Hell, I don't know anything about ethnic studies either, but Professor Malone didn't seem to care.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I'll take this one. Churchill landed that gig by FALSELY claiming to be a native American, by doing some wurl' class a$$ kissing, and by aligning himself with a politically correct movement at a time the university was striving mightily to demonstrate that it was PC.  He certainly was not selected on the basis of his scholarship, or his meager academic credentials, which aren't even in the quasi-discipline of "ethnic studies," whatever that is.  In many ways he's the Ken Malone of CU, although arguably much less qualified than Malone.  If your BS detector was properly tuned and you met this guy, you'd immediately ascertain that he's a loud mouthed opportunistic poseur and nothing more. And privately, CU faculty members will tell you that he's been an embarrassment to the university for years.  His latest buffoonery is merely the piece de resistance.

I feel very safe in saying that I believe you smacked that nail squarely on top of its head!

I think there are a few more facets to the resignation than Ward Churchill.

CU's football program has been racked by scandal, with a former female football player and some female trainers claiming sexual abuse against some football players and a former assistant football coach. I think that is a much bigger deal to anyone at CU than Ward Churchill, and the football story has garnered more negative attention and for a longer period of time.

I think CU's prez was a victim of the Peter Principle.

CU's a university with a variety of problems. Ward Churchill. Football program--not only sexual abuse, but the use of prostitutes, liquor, and drugs to recruit football players. The AD owning liquor stores close to campus so it would be easier to buy liquor for recruiting. 3 or so students die of alcohol poisoning.

Here's a link to a web story with a little more info on this:

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~30780~2749276,00.html

And some selected quotations:

"Hoffman's announcement comes as Colorado's flagship university faces mounting pressure over alleged use of sex, alcohol and drugs in its recruiting of football players."

"Hoffman also has been embroiled in a controversy over Ward Churchill, an ethnic studies professor who wrote an essay comparing some victims of the 9/11 terror attacks to a Nazi leader."

"'I have spoken many times about my view of principled leadership,'" Hoffman's letter says. "It has become clear to me that, amid the serious matters the University of Colorado now confronts, my role as the leader of the University has become an issue."

"It appears to me it is in the University’s best interest that I remove the issue of my future from the debate so that nothing inhibits CU’s ability to successfully create the bright future it so deserves.

"Therefore, I intend to resign my position as President of the University of Colorado effective June 30, 2005 or whenever the Board names a successor."

Hoffman added, "I do not take this step lightly or hastily. I love CU. I have given it my heart and soul these past five years. I deeply appreciate the enormous support and assistance I have received from the students, faculty, administrators, legislature and the larger CU community."

**********************************

And if I may say so, not matter what the issues surrounding this or her participation in / responsibility for them, at least she has the grace, dignity, and class to resign when she felt that it was in the best interest of the school.

Not so, Shelboo.
