Congratulations, President Kennedy, and the entire William Carey family. Since your enrollment is up, you probably need more classroom space. Might we interest you in some prime real estate on Hardy Street?

William Carey College saw a 7 percent increase in enrollment in the spring trimester from 2,736 in 2004 to 2,921 in 2005, with 185 more students. Record enrollments also were set in the fall and winter terms.

Carey is on the trimester system with three 10-week sessions, a summer mini term and one regular summer term.

The 99-year-old Baptist school has a main campus in Hattiesburg, and campuses in Gulfport and New Orleans.

"William Carey College is a private school that pays attention to the individual student and offers a quality education," said Barbara Hamilton, the school's executive assistant to the president. "The students know everyone on campus and feel like part of an extended family."

Carey's mission statement encourages the growth of each student in scholarship, leadership and service. In the area of scholarship, students are encouraged to excel in their major degree program.

Kristen Miller, a senior theater major of Purvis, recently was awarded the second place Barbizon design award at the American College Theatre Festival in West Palm Beach, Fla.

"I chose Carey because I knew I'd get a hands on, one-on-one education," said Miller. "That is exactly what I got."

"The professors in the Biblical studies department do not just teach, they guide you with life applications and allow you to develop your own ideas about faith and Christianity," said Jennifer Baker, a Biblical studies major of Picayune.

A number of renovations and expansions are under way as part of the school's five-year plan. Improvements include new intramural and soccer fields, a baseball and softball complex, wrought iron fencing surrounding the Hattiesburg campus, exterior Williamsburg light posts, pitched roofs replacing flat roofs and a basketball gym renovation.

Construction recently was completed on a new education building, the Lorena Roseberry Smith Hall, which opened in January. Construction has begun on Donnell Hall, which will house the Center for the Study of the Life and Work of William Carey. The Center will include artifacts, books and other materials of Carey's life and work in India and will serve as a center for scholarly research.

Almost 3,000 students and growing. William Carey is not only growing in numbers but it is also growing in other ways. A 3,000 student body school is nothing to sneeze at. It will continue to be a force to be rekoned with in the Hattiesburg area. USM may offer more academic majors, but it is not the only game in town. William Carey offers the basics - and more. Their graduates do very well, thank you.

Since William Carey had a 7 percent increase during the spring trimester, that means that they'll be up an astonishing 21 percent for the academic year.....right?

Isn't it a strange coincidence . . . WC's enrollment begins to skyrocket with astonishing growth numbers at about the same time that USM starts having all of it's scandels?

Almost 3,000 students at William Carey. Not bad at all. A few days ago somebody pointed out that MC's enrollment is only about 3,500. And they have their own accredited law school. You'd better clean up your act, USM, or you'll have another MC knocking on your back door!

If Thursday's meeting pertained to William Carey instead of USM, the Coca Cola Cowboys (and cowgirls) would undoubtedly be laughted out of the rodeo ring. This goes to show just how weak the USM faculty must be perceived.

WCC has been running aggressive ad campaign since SFT took over USM.  Seems like they saw an opening and really took advantage of it.  Shows what good leadership can do.

No, it's not privitization. The focus on privitazation, money, and profit has da*n well helped ruin USM. Service to students and to community rather than service to self is the difference. Quite the opposite of privitization.

Take a look at the WCC nursing program, with all the former USM faculty there, looks more like USM SON than USM SON. They even recruited SON administrative assistant (who was moved to CoH with reorganization) And a NEW BUILDING.  Dean is a former "one of the best" USM faculty, Dr. Mary Stewart...who has led WCC SON to now offer graduate degrees in nursing and significant enrollment increase.  Rumor has it that former USM faculty who are now WCC got much better salaries.  But then with a new building, visionary Dean, small classes and high RN licensure pass rates, what do they have that WE don't have?  Why would anyone want to go there?????
