Since the HA may not have enough guts to ask Malone about his alleged "lynching" remark, and since no other media in MS may think it's worth their time, it occurred to me to ask whether you, as a "reporter" for the Liberty and Power blog, might be willing to give him a call and put the question to him directly, perhaps taping his answer (with his permission). One would think he would positively WELCOME an opportunity to deny this report if it is untrue. And YOU have already shown that you are a man of guts (even Shelby would have to concede your red-blooded-American-maleness). It would certainly make for an interesting phone conversation! I can imagine many reasons why you might not want to do this, and I would not blame you at all, but I thought I would at least raise the possibility.
The only drawback I can see is that the Thames administration won't consider Liberty and Power a legitimate medium. We're strictly online, and we do opinion pieces. I've said some pretty uncomplimentary things about Ken Malone in the recent past, and I will not be getting more complimentary after his reported call for a lynching.I
Much as Malone hates Kevin Walters, he feels some obligation to respond when a reporter for a daily newspaper asks him for a quotation.
So I think a reporter for a daily located in Mississippi has a substantially better chance of getting his or her calls returned.
Now if there is no movement on that front by, say, the middle of the week I may change my mind. This is the kind of story that should be getting play nationally. And bloggers have been known to scoop the print media...
Thanks for even considering this, and thanks for a typically thoughtful reply. I'm a bit astonished that no local media have yet asked Malone about this claim. I'm also surprised (NOT) that Malone hasn't issued a clear, unequivocal denial of the rumor. That, after all, would be very easy for him to do -- that is, unless he knew that such a denial could and would be contradicted by many people who heard him say exactly what he is alleged to have said.
This reminds me of another bit of information from the Faculty Senate meeting yesterday. President Beckett asked Sue Pace, the head staff person of Continuing Education, to address FS and bring it up to date on the changes in CE. The story goes that she agreed, but later said she couldn't and her boss Ken Malone would address the Senate. I know Senators had their questions ready for Malone on several topics besides CE. At the last minute Malone said he couldn't come and so neither Malone nor Pace addressed FS.
I forgot to mention that Kevin Walters was in attendence at the FS meeing, as usual. It would have been a very interesting meeting if Malone showed up.
