Since Lisa Mader invited the following "local business supporters of the university" to co-host the meeting at the Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Plant next week, isn't it time to recognize these people:
Hosts are Brad Brian Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Bobby Dews Dews Foundry Bonnie Drews Richard Drews Dentist Gwen James Coldwell Banker Don Nace Realty Richard Jones Hattiesburg Area Development Partnership Jan Lacy Copy Cats Printing Bob Mixon Courtesy Ford> Carl Nicholson Nicholson & Company, Accountants Doug Rouse Southern Bone & Joint Clinic Specialists Lawrence Warren Warren Paving
It seems logical that residents of the Hub City, who believe that recent events are good for the university and the local community, would choose to support these businesses.
Similarly, if you believe that recent events aren't conducive to the continuing "support of academic excellence," doesn't it seem that you should choose to let these businesses know of your disagreement with them, say by choosing not to use their products and services?
After all, if a television program's advertisers can be "held accountable" for their support of broadcast programs, shouldn't this also hold true here?
I am outraged that my personal physian, Dr. Doug Rouse, would cast himself so firmly in the pro-SFT/anti-USM camp. I am just flabbergasted. He has performed surgery on me and my family.
I am calling his secretary Monday, even if I have to wait to get her, to tell her that henceforth, my family and I are not setting foot in Southern Thames Bone and Joint Suppository. If I can, I will get him PERSONALLY.
I knew he did good things for the athletic teams but I really didn't know he was in on the money scam of downgrading USM to lower tier teaching status in exchange for personal gain.
I already don't do bidness with the others.
I wonder if Dr. Doug Rouse has ANY idea of the anti SFT feeling in this community, like the oh, say, HA polls that usually run in the low to mid 90 percents AGAINST SFT. I suppose ole Doug is really stupider than I could have ever imagined.
Goodbye Dr. Rouse. Hello Dr. Conn
I know quite a few ANTI-Thames doctors at Hattiesburg Clinic, however.

At one time Dr. Halliwell was viewed as our "departmental dentist." I went to him upon the recommendation of many colleagues. I have used him for several years. I will continue to do so.

This is a point that always needs to be emphasized. I hope someone will mention it at the meeting itself. I have NEVER seen a pro-Thames result in these polls, and the results are usually lop-sidedly anti-Thames. It would be easy to document this by checking past threads on this board and the old Fire Shelby board.

On the walls of the young Dr. Halliwell's office i some rather interesting art that will appeal to those who appreciate art and music. And he'll even talk to you about those things. I'd love to get a toothache just to sit in his procedures chair and talk with him.
The regular posters will recall the discussion and boycot of The Purple Parrot sometime ago. I did not see the Purple Parrot owners' names in the recent anti- faculty letter in the HA. And I did not see their names on the list of Coca-Cola plant meeting organizers either! There is a lesson to be learned here - maybe the Coca-Cola bunch will discover that the street runs two ways.

Hear! Hear! All of the above, About town. And based smy experience there, one gets a prompt appointment when there is an emergency.
But Crescent City was not mentioned among the names. Boycotts don't normally last forever. Shouldn't the boycotters reconsider, at least temporarily? I don't know. I'm just asking.

So if now they keep quiet, it's okay? Just wait it out and it will go away? Not for me.
What made the gay population acceptable in this country? Their dollars!
What killed apartheid in South Africa? In the 80s Black South Africans were earning more than White South Africans and the Blacks started boycotting White businesses. Drink Pepsi. Buy a Honda. Eat at Chesterfield's. Rouse is not the only doc in town, etc. etc.
Go for it guys and show them what y'all are made of. Good luck, I am crossing my fingers

Uh, isn't Dr. Conn at Southern Bone and Joint, too? And if we are miffed because the pres at BancorpSouth stood with SFT last year, we should remember that the president of Trustmark, headed up the Win-Win bond issue last year.
Everybody in town wants a piece of that big USM money, and it's the administration that decides where it goes.

I'll continue to use Trustmark. But I will speak with a high-ranking officer at their home base in Jackson about this. The bond issue is past and trivial.
About 2 weeks ago I spoke to a "friend" in Hatties. Asked him how things were going at USM. W"We don't care, the city is growing, Target, Old Navy ..." I think you guys know where you stand. BTW, Hancock is one helluva bank

Yes, Dr. Conn is with Southern Bone and Joint. But as far as orthopedic doctors go....I don't know who or where the Thames boys have friends (Forrest General and Hattiesburg Clinic)?????????????????????????????????????
I just came from a Sunday school class meeting here in the ‘Burg. It was heartening to hear so many local professional people, such as doctors, lawyers, realtors—all of them in their mid to late forties—speaking forcefully about how it is time for a new leader at USM. They asked me what I am doing and, to be honest, I told them it’s hard to know what to do. I teach my classes, do my research and service, try to share what I know with locals. But people like me don’t have the “ear” of a Board member. They all agreed and said they are faced with the same dilemma.
They care about the University and want us to continue to thrive. They don’t like the idea of losing ground in the liberal arts. One of them said: “I owe my success to the liberal arts faculty [at another institution that he attended] because I know I could never have been successful in law school, or in my practice, without the research, communication, and critical thinking skills that they taught me.” These supporters are out there, but they don’t know what to do to help. Suggestions?

Letters to the editor would help. It's astonishing, for instance, how often poor John Ower, or a few USM faculty members, have been the only local residents to write in behalf of the right values at USM. These potential supporters should be flooding the papers with letters.

I agree. I've heard the statement that the papers don't publish all the lettes submitted to them. However, every single letter I have submitted has been published, usually by both the HA and the CL, and I am an "outsider." Surely letters from local residents would be published if people made the effort to write. Look at the pitifully poor letters that have been published attempting to defend SFT. I am not convinced that the papers are shutting out anti-SFT letters.
I attended a wonderful, wonderful performance on campus of the opera "Susannah" last weekend, and I noticed, as I always do when I attend these events, that the audience was at least 75% retirees.
When I arrived here almost a decade ago I was told the town was ranked in the top 10% in the U.S. as a retirement community because of the hospitals, of course, but also because of the Arts events sponsored by the university. If the Arts go so do the retirees. I would hope that some business leaders would keep that in mind. The potential retirement population with its spending dollars is only going to grow in the next two to three decades. They'll retire where there is good health care and community arts events sponsored by universities like USM.
