OK, let's come up with SOME good things about USM, just to get rid of a little negativity for a while!! I don't mean good things The Napolegnome has done, but just good things in general....there has to be a few...
I'll start...
Campus security at GP really does a good job. Several times I have had to walk to my car alone at night, and every time I see the security watching to make sure I get to my car okay. One of the trucks even followed me out to the unlit "grass lot" every night until I was safely in my car and on my way last semester. They make me feel a lot safer!
Cher, New Orleans is not the States! It is a small foreign country which accidentally bumped into the USA and stuck. If you think Mississippi politics stink, live in Louisiana for a time.
The best thing about USM is its faculty and staff. It never ceases to amaze me how many people with degrees from all over the country come to teach at USM---if you look outside the Dome, it is amazing how few good ole boys there are.
Also, I think the theater department is phenomenal. "Cabaret" a few semesters ago--the fact that we even have talented students, and that many talented students, at USM and in Mississippi is amazing.
If Thames or the College Board or even the legislature would sit back and realize how much sheer talent has come out of Mississippi, maybe they wouldn't try so hard to keep Mississippi down.
Ree- I agree with your comment about the faculty and staff. I am so suprised how many are still sticking around. I guess they realize when you are this far down there is no way to go but up. Thames can't last forever and hopefully our next president will be a great one.

If you look at Babbs list, it doesn't seem that way at all. The ones sticking around are probably ones close to retirement. I would wager many are looking. It can take awhile to find a new home.

Pumpkin, that "other" thread was intended to be serious from the very first posting. The instructions on the initial posting specified "Nothing negative, please. Be serious." That was eleven days ago. There have been many posts on that very long thread, but nothing of consequence. It was hoped that somebody could idenify some progress. Even trolls were invited to post. Lots of luck in this attempt to find something positive.
Hey Boudreaux, how come you care about NooOrlians? Your capital is Lafayette, non? Did you vote for the Nazi or the crook that time, by the way? Thibodeaux 'n you ever get the results of the "cat scan" back??

Maybe Mr. Johnson will be able to tell us something positive, serious, and specific.

Ree: thank you for your kind words about theatre. My students and colleagues would be very pleased to hear that. I'd like to plug our other half the dance program. They do really great work and are getting better and better every year in my opinion.
And even though I sometimes get frustrated with them and the cultural differences between a New York Yankee and residents from the Deep South -- our students. The best of them are really talented if maybe underexposed to many creative forms. But almost all of them at bottom are good people who want to do well . . . and if we are allowed to do our jobs . . . most of them will do just fine.

Hmmm.... Maybe the attitude Stephen describes is a good thing that can be said about USM. In spite of all the "weirdness," most of the faculty I'm in contact with are devoted to their students & their chosen fields of study.
It's the ones that are devoted to optimizing their profits that bother me...

Monique, Thibodeau and me we vote fer dat der crook, yea. In Lafayette whare we frum dey de only ones you can trust. Cat scan come back negative, dey say nutin in me head.
I had the privilege to be part of the Honors College during my years at USM.
Since graduating from USM I have attended three other Universities. I got degrees at two, both higher tier than USM. Few students at the other universities had part time jobs, at USM that was a given. The students at USM know much more about the real world than SFT&Co. think.
I hope USM can continue to provide opportunities to the students of today it provided to me many years ago.
There was an old advertisement for USM, "A Distinguished University." Don't let it become "An Extinguished University."

I assume you are equating native Mississippian's to "good ole boys." Well, you are right. There aren't many good ole boys at USM because USM drives them away - like they did to Noel Polk. Good ole boys do come to USM, but USM can't keep them. They leave for better pastures. Some of us have hair raising stories to tell about it. I'd sure like to have my story included in that Exit 13 sequel.
