BOARD TO ACCEPT COMMISSIONER MEREDITH'S REQUEST TO RETIRE

http://www.ihl.state.ms.us/ihl/newsstory.asp?ID=662

Jackson, MS -  In a statement issued to the general public earlier today, Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Thomas C. Meredith formally announced his decision to retire from the position of Commissioner, effective close of business November 15, 2008. Until that time, the Commissioner will be available to the Board on an as-needed basis. The Board is expected to accept Commissioner Meredith's request during its next meeting, currently scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2008, beginning at 2:00 pm in room 935 of the IHL Executive Office, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS, 39211.

"During his tenure, Commissioner Meredith made a positive difference for Mississippi's eight public universities and within Mississippi's public education system," said IHL Board President Amy Whitten. "We are grateful for his many accomplishments, and are confident his vision of increasing the quantity of baccalaureate degree holders of even higher quality will continue."

A copy of Commissioner Meredith's public statement can be found here: http://www.mississippi.edu/commissioner/downloads/cohetcm_081022.pdf.

He will now go to Ole Miss and take up his seat at the family table, where his colleagues have  been gorging themselves over the years.  He will continue to say, howevever, "I did not do anything wrong."  The fact that he doesn't think he did anything wrong tells us volumes about the man's judgment and moral principles.  Amy Whitten assuredly will take the position of commissioner after perhaps some protesting the fact that she really doesn't want to do it.  But 366K is more money that she has seen in her lifetime!  And the beat will go on.

Exactly.  Most people will now close the books on this situation, or at least pretend to do so.
Look for MSU to be very active (as active as Ole Miss will let them be) in the search for a replacement.

Don't presume that Tom will be welcome at the table in Oxford. There is a reason that Bobby Khayat is Chancellor now & Tom isn't.
