This was a stressful  and disappointing week for the entire Mr. Wonderful organization.  It was stressful because of the extremely high volume of message board postings which required double duty on the part of the selection committee members as they monitored the message board. It was disappointing because of Thursday's lack lustre IHL events in Jackson. There were many thoughtful posts on the message board this week and the committee had great difficulty in settling on the final recipients. But here they are:

HONORABLE MENTION: Nest Egg - "USM's troubles were entirely unnecessary had IHL listened to the faculty in the first place, or even in the second place. If most any other profession (e.g., medicine, law) expressed the type of knowledgable objection that the USM faculty expressed, their governing board would have hopped on the case immediately. Our IHL, on the other hand, sat on the egg until it hatched. And my what a big ugle bird has surfaced."

HONORABLE MENTION: History Repeated - "Nothing will change around this place until USM gets off the plantation system."

FIRST RUNNER UPFar Away Alum - "The USM faculty has done a terrific job over the years, educating many first generation college students, doing important research in the face of heavy teaching loads and miniscule funding, etc., but it has fallen short in one area. Students are rarely told about the history of the university in society and about the ideals that though now under attack, are essential, not just for the university itself but for the intellectual health of society. How many students have learned the importance of academic freedom, of faculty governance, of the tenure system?"

A NOTE FROM THE SELECTION COMMITTEE:  Before directing your attention to this week's winner, we would like to thank USM Alum and Invictus for posting some comments that caused the committee to give the winning post a second look. USM Alum wrote, "That's the most insightful post I've read;" and Invictus wrote: "That was an excellent post  . . . . .  you should consider using it as the basis for a letter to the editor." But for now (drum roll) - here is this week's WINNER!

THE WINNER:  - qwerty - "I'm a graduate of a leading southern state univeristy that really does have a "world class" reputation, and the differences between how students and alumni there and at USM regard the quality of their respective institutions is striking. At my alma mater, students see a direct connection between the quality of their education, and the quality of the faculty and library facitilites. They see a direct connection between the reputation of the institution and their future career prospects in business and professional or graduate school. My alumni magazine recently had a major feature on ways in which the school is raising salaries to fight off raids on the faculty. Over the years, students have voted to increase their student fees to support the library (which has faced cutbacks, like everywhere else). Students have supported tuition increases earmarked for faculty salary increases. I know that if the head of the school tried to fire tenured professors, the campus would explode. I think this situation would apply to most leading universities in the country where alumni see themselves as stewards of the school and its reputation.

Nest Egg, History Repeated, Far Away Alum, and qwerty, congratulations to the four of you. The competition was particulary stiff this week. And remember what a poster said a few months ago . . . .  "NO QUARTER: NOT EVEN A DIME!"

I will treasure the honor of being one of this week's honorable mention recipients. I should have named the species of big ugly bird that the IHL has hatched. It is an ostrich with its head stuck firmly in the sand. But it may be that the head is firmly stuck somewhere else.

Wow. I've never even been close to winning anything before. Thanks.
