I noticed the other thread about the new SGA president. I have a couple of questions I thought worthy of another thread:
1. Wasn't Krebs the VP (or something) last year?
2. Remember last year that Cain's administration was allocated about twice the amount of money given to the SGA the previous year (most of the addition was for the Varsity Voice, etc.). At an early SGA meeting, one Senator questioned where the funds came from. I believe it was Krebs who rebuked this Senator by saying it was not their place to worry about where the money was coming from, only how to spend it. Isn't this accurate? It's all in the old versions of the Student Printz. These are searchable online I suppose.
It is full of little tidbits like this (my bolded text):
During the meeting, when Moss asked where increased funds for the budget would come from, SGA Vice President Jonathan Krebs said that was not a concern for the senators.
“The job of the senate is to locate these funds, not to determine where they are coming from,” said Krebs. “It’s up to the administration to approve or deny it.”
Treasurer Chad Cornett told senators the budget funds were a mixture of fees granted to the SGA from student fees, outside funding, carryover and other funding. “It’s a very complicated matter,” said Cornett. “I’m the treasurer and I don’t understand it all.”
WTF????
If I was a student at USM right now, I would DEMAND to know what new programming is being proposed with this increased budget. This is YOUR money, students! Don't let Walt Cain pull an SFT and get away with telling you it's none of your business!!

What has happened to critical thinking - isn't the SGA composed of LEADERS who you'd imagine would know how to put their brains to work? Shouldn't leaders be able to think for themselves??? Don't see it happening.

If I were a SGA VP and Shelboo offered money to my constituents, I'd take it. That's what politics is all about. Give the kid a break. We gave Shelby Freakin' Thames the benefit of the doubt when he was annointed.....give Jonathan the same courtesy.
Seems like Joe Paul is the Administrator responsible for SGA, he obviously would approve any money being given to the SGA, I don't think the SGA can vote themselves a raise. It has to be signed off on by the supervising administrator.
I am not a faculty member, but I know for a fact that the SGA has been and will continue to be bought by the administration. The plantation system is continuing, and Shelby is bring in younger and younger members to the fold. Krebs will end up being worse than Walt Cain when all is said and done. Shelby has promised graduate school placements at other institutions, etc., to get what he wants. Wait and see what has happened to Jared Loftus and Walt Cain. Young people can be bought much more cheaply than older people, a fact Shelby is well aware of.

You guys sure are cynical. I don't know this young man, but having worked with young people most of my life, I don't agree with your last sentence at all. Nevertheless, the claim that Thames promised personal advancement to students is chilling.
It is amazing that what some astute posters recognized as a political payoff from Thames 10 months ago is now being forgotten/forgiven. Someone needs to keep "kicking up" the post about "why faculty are losing the war against Thames" --- this is a good example.
That Thames is interested in buying the support of the Student Government leadership I have no doubt. It is a tactic that Thames learned from Generalissimo McCain, as he is called in Exit 13.
I just want to make sure that that such charges are documented. The initial thread about Krebs made allegations about Krebs being a water-carrier for Thames that weren't substantiated. And--I would guess along with most participants here--I had forgotten the item from Fire Shelby in which Krebs was quoted in support of Walt Cain.
By the way, there is no reason to suppose that Joe Paul knew a damn thing about the extra money going into the Student Government budget. Thames makes end-runs around other administrators and intervenes directly all the time. But if Paul did know about the money, and gave the enhanced SGA budget his approval, that is a significant lapse of integrity on his part.
robert--a number of us are unclear about joe paul's role in things around here. he is probably quite savvy given he was a member of the local school board for a number of years. i also know that he guards his budgets--a number of years ago the graduate student group wanted a piece of the student activity fee and he declined to give them any.
Joe Paul must resign when Thames goes. He may not be one of the people closest to Thames, but we all know thatThames doesn't keep anyone who isn't faithful around--especially that close to him. And Joe was at the table when Myron was so brutally attacked by the cabinet last year. In fact, he joined in on it.
Joe is someone that had a voice in the community. He could have spoken out about many of the travesties that have occurred. I've heard folks defend him--that he needs to keep his position because he has young children--that won't work. He has a gazillion years in the retirmenet system--not only that if he's as good as everyone seems to think he is, he should be able to get another administrative job elsewhere. Or he can return to the faculty. Others sure have done it.
Many posters on this board have kept their identities quiet and not spoken out in public against Thames. But, because Joe Paul has remained silent, he is being ridiculed. That is just wrong. Joe is a fine man and a wonderful administrator. Faculty and Administration speak out or keep quiet for different reasons. As much as I'd like to see Thames go, that doesn't mean that everyone else needs to be trashed too.
pit·i·ful (pt-fl) adj. Arousing contemptuous pity, as through ineptitude or inadequacy.
Just wanted to make sure that you understood the word that those of us based in reality use to describe you and the time you waste conjuring up conspiracy theories rather than DOING YOUR JOB!

A very good suggestion, Professor Campbell. I understand that Troll Haven not only provides a playground for the pre- adolescent trolls like FTT, but it also has a nursing home facility for trolls who have memory loss.

I'd be careful on these kinds of things . . . in a sense, all of us who stay here are collaborationists to some degree. Most of us who stay try to find some path of maintaining personal integrity while trying to do our jobs and also trying to creatively figure out ways to subvert the administration . . . .
Its my belief that there are people at all levels working in quiet ways to topple the tower. One thing Joe has not done is been aggressively public any more than necessary to do his job. For a man who seems to have committed himself over many years to working with students, I don't think it is too much to give him the courtesy of trying to find a middle ground. If I were in his position, for instance, I'd wonder what my resignation/firing would gain -- given the nastiness of many of Shelby's appointeees in terms of how they treat people, I'd feel pretty responsible if the people who worked under me in my office ended up with a boss who was as crass and thoughtless to employees as many of these appointees seem to be . . .
There are simply some people in the administration we are going to have to hope are trying to do their best to stave off the worst effects of the reign of terror and sort it out later. Those who are truly moving the aims of the regime forward with eagerness are one thing -- those who may be quietly and reluctantly (and probably not publically) resisting are another.
