The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) today released a statement concerning the issues surrounding The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). Board President Roy Klumb said:
“The board has deliberately and thoroughly discussed all relevant issues at USM. The Board remains singularly focused on the task of moving the university forward and past the accreditation problems.”
Today, the Board also named Dr. L.C. Dorsey the Educator of the Year as part of its Black History Awards program. Dr. Dorsey is the associate director of the Delta Research and Cultural Institute at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). MVSU President Lester Newman nominated her. Dr. Dorsey was named Educator of the Year for her involvement in a number of community-based projects and her commitment to contributions to the advancement of diversity. Because of a prior engagement, Dr. Dorsey was unable to attend the Board meeting, but will receive her plaque at the March Board meeting.
The Board also presented an award to Ms. Constance Slaughter-Harvey during the Black History program. She received the Community Award for her commitment to preserve the heritage of African Americans and the heritage of all citizens of Mississippi.
The program honored nominees from each of the eight public universities in Mississippi. Each nominee was recognized by the president of the university for his or her commitment to the advancement of diversity on each campus. The honorees include:
Dr. David Stuart Blackburn, Alcorn State University
Ms. Tracy Treon Mims, Delta State University
Dr. Alisa L. Mosley, Jackson State University
Dr. William Person, Mississippi State University (MSU)
Mr. Clifford Hampton, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, MSU Extension Service
Ms. Anika Mitchell Perkins, Mississippi University for Women
Dr. L.C. Dorsey (Educator of the Year), Mississippi Valley State University
Dr. Ethel Young-Minor, The University of Mississippi
Dr. Jasmine Taylor, The University of Mississippi Medical Center
Mr. Andre Heath, The University of Southern Mississippi.
In other business, the Board approved the articulation agreement for students dually enrolled in high school and college-level course work. They also approved amendments to the Board Policies and Bylaws related to non-tenure track, freshman admission requirements, intermediate courses, and the policy on the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination.
The Board heard from the president of each university about proposed plans to offset possible budget cuts. Options include tuition hikes, loss of faculty, cutting programs offered to students, elimination of services to the public and losing research funds.
The next meeting of the Board is March 17 in Jackson.
