Great Timing, CL

See today's CL editorial, "Honorable thing for Thames to do — resign", by Eric Stringfellow, linked under Thames News on the AAUP front page.

"Thames' recalcitrance means the state College Board, which is meeting today, should stop hoping USM's issues evaporate. It's unfair to faculty members and, most importantly, to students."

"Board members are shirking their responsibilities by endorsing the stream of distractions. Everyone, especially the university, would be best served if the board announced an exit strategy for Thames."

"If Thames doesn't see the light, the College Board has to show him. Today."

I hope my husband doesn't mind, but I just fell in love with Eric Stringfellow.

This is the best article yet.  It is clear, concise, to the point and brings up honor, something that should be near and dear to a worl' class southern gentleman like Thames.

Wow!

And this is the same columnist who wrote a mealy-mouthed defense of Thames the last time he commented on the situation at USM.   That tells you how much damage the Black Friday memo has done to the Thames regime, among those who are paying attention.

Thames has no sense of honor, so Stringfellow's appeal to him will go nowhere.  But let's hope 7 or more Board members are listening.

"...a worl' class southern gentleman like Thames."

For those of you familiar with the first act of Gone With the Wind, you will remember that "true Southern Gentlemen" find honor a very important thing to have.  However, you'll also remember that these same "Southern Gentlemen" have bucketloads of pride that can get them into bucketloads of trouble ("one Southerner can whip 10 Yankees").  In Shelby's case, I think pride wins out, and he goes down with the ship he's sinking.

Although I think a typical Southern man can still whip a solid 6-7 Yankees  :)

That's the kind of thinking that got you into trouble in the 1860s!

Good point. The planter class held to its code of "honor", but keep in mind there is also the white trash peckerwood stereotype. They don't have honor (think the various members of the Snopes family in Faulker's novels). Thames is of that type

Eric  certainly writes some head scratching columns.  My favorite by Mr Stringfellow was a piece he wrote a while back explaining why there should be a Burger King in west Jackson.

Just when I decide Eric's journalism is not something I care to read he comes up with a very insightful column about the Jackson City council and now of course the the well thought out piece about the train wreck at USM.

Now turn to the next page of the Clairon Ledger and read Thomas Sowell's syndicated column.

Talk about missing the point on freedom of speech and tenure.

The Rock, I agree with Land of Lincoln.  6 or 7 is too high for a work day.  Usually we can only whip 5 on a work day. The 10 is for the weekend.  Now that does average out to 6.42 a day, but that's averaging, and no good southern gentlemen do that.

I rely on the electronic edition of the CL, which doesn't seem to include Sowell's column.

Is it a general-purpose piece on tenure and freedom of speech, or is it a reaction to particular individuals (e.g., Ward Churchill)?

Sorry, I meant to address that to state street--not assume his or her identity.

A link to the Sowell editorial is on drudgereport.com.  Sowell is listed alphbetically among numerous other editorial writers.

Actually, I think the piece is quite good.  Academia needs to come to grips with the growing unease the public has with the tenure/academic freedom issue or have draconian changes imposed by outsiders.  As for the Harvard President, what is wrong with his suggestion to consider all possible reasons for the paucity of women scientists?   Would there be a similar furor if someone suggested that men may be less gifted than women in learning a foreign language?
