Larry Eustachy addressed the departure of Sam Richardson after yesterday's big loss at home to Houston. Here are some Eustachy quotes from the paper:
"He [Sam Richardson] was in over his head. I haven't heard from him [since before Friday]. If we had him [for today's game], if we had his 0.9 rebounds and 0.6 points (Richardson's C-USA averages), we'd have been another point-9 and point-6 closer. So I don't think it devastated the game."
The guy (Eustachy) seems like a real ****. This is how he treats 19/20 year olds who come to play for him. Real stand up guy.
I have seen an image that will not bode well for Eustachy:
Imagine a rival school's fan, clipping articles that contain this type of quotes. Now imagine that fan faxing copies to college coaches everywhere with the tagline "How Southern Miss's Larry Eustachy Treats His Players. Would you want to play for Larry Eustachy?" Now imagine eeach college coach putting copies in briefcases for use in home visits....

Contrary to what might be said elsewhere, nobody is looking for a stand up guy. They just want a winner. Winning absolves all character flaws, save those that are publicly exposed.
The egos of high school superstars being what they are, I suspect Eustachy will be able to recruit despite being such a jackass. Don't forget, these 19/20 year olds did not come to play for LE, they were recruited by JG. LE will just flatter the prospect by telling him how much better he is than the mediocre players Green recruited.
I posted part of this a couple of days ago, but it still is timely.
Pat Conroy wrote a book called, "My Losing Season". Conroy played at the Citadel for a psycho coach similar to Larry Eustachy. It made for good reading, but you really felt for the kids who had to put up with the insanity. For those who do not know the author Pat Conroy, he wrote "Prince of Tides" and "The Great Santini". I also played for a crazy coach in JR. College and it was not pleasant. I was kicked off the team at next to the last game of my second year. Fortunately the President honored my scholarship. In contrast, my two years at a four program was very rewarding and allowed me to get a good education in a decent liberal arts program. I can identify with the disappointment these players must feel. They came here to play for an honorable man and ended playing for a nut case.

I don't know if the Hindenburg is comparable to the Titantic as a metaphor for disaster, but I think the following could be applied to the current events at Southern Miss:
"Oh, the humanity!"
"I... Listen, folks, I'm gonna have to stall for a minute because I've lost my voice. This is the worst thing I've ever witnessed."
Radio announcer Herb Morrison watching the crash of the Hindenburg, May 6, 1937
i don't follow the basketball team much (in fact, i read more here than i do in the HA) and i also read the "losing season." i don't find the "turmoil" to be all that unusual, given a change in coaches. there are lots of activities where a coaching / leadership change happens (athletics, theater, debate, band program) and the old players or participants don't like the new person. one of my children started playing for a team the first year a new coach took over. several seniors didn't try out, those that did quit the team by midseason. why? they just didn't like the new coach, openly talked about how they like the old coach better. same thing happened this year--new coach--all the juniors and seniors quit. crazy or bad coach--no. the basketball coach at USM didn't recruit these players and sometimes they don't "gee and haw."
SCM, This is far more than what you describe. Coaches normally do not make derogatory comments about players that leave, especially when the player goes quietly. This is a man with no class who fits well with the present administration. Also, most coaches coach the players they have and then go get the players they want. Given that most of the players that have left are from Mississippi, or close, it will not help his recruiting in the area.

I suspect that a high school coach who might have encouraged a particular player to attend USM might reconsider during the next recuriting round if the referral did not work out well. In that case it could be a bonanza for the other colleges and universities in the state.
i'll admit this isn't my speciality, but i've been around enough universities to know that coaching changes often bring player departures. to "call out" a player--i don't know. i don't know what question was asked that prompted the response. i remember james green was criticized for his handling of players. like i say, i don't know.
it really doesn't matter what question prompted that response. larry eustachy is well into adulthood and should have the common decency not to bad-mouth 17-22 year old kids. the guy who quit didn't make a big deal about it, he just quit -- no press conference, no media involvement, nothing. then eustachy pops off because, according to a former player who told me this from his own mouth, "he [eustachy] has no idea what to do to get things turned around." i'm sure he's frustrated. i'm sure he thought it would be bad at usm, but he couldn't have known it would be this bad, and he cannot quit or he'll never coach again.
this is not the first time that low-class slimeball has bad-mouthed a student-athlete. jasper johnson is considered by many faculty to be the epitome of the "student-athlete," yet eustachy ran him off and talked bad about him in the press. same goes for several other former players. james green may not have been perfect, but i don't remember him ever going public with dirty laundry, even when he was railroaded out of his job.
i'll go one step further: i'll say that i hope crystal (basket) ball's prediction is right and that every recruiter for every other c-usa school and every other recruiter of eustachy's target players gets copies of his ignorant a$$ talking about the very players he was hired to coach. maybe then he'll be able to make shelby happy and compete with william carey -- for basketball recruits.
by the way, my odorless cheese is served in fine establishments like the commissary at the pentagon.
odorless--i'll take your word for it. i don't follow the basketball team much, follow minor sports more. by the way, stinky cheese takes a while to get used to.
