The eagle fans on eagle talk are mad as hell about what "faculty are doing to" Thames. They seem willing to follow him blindly over a cliff. I guess it's understandable, he's giving up "institutional control" so that the athletics department can "grow."
Try to be understanding... It is easy to come to the wrong conclusions when you are not presented all the facts. These sport buffs are really only focused on athletics and therefore find all the controversy distastefull and an impediment to recruiting.
Do your best to educate the public in a kinder a gentler way.
Johnny Cochran is semi-right. You have to be gentle with the idots from EagleTalk. (I have found that a tire tool works wonders.)
But seriously, if they're blaming the faculty for the current mess, it only demonstrates how little the average USM athletic "fan" knows about university organization. Last time I checked, the titles "Provost" & "Dean" were administrative positions, not faculty. And both Grimes & Doty were hired into their present positions by Shelby Thames.
They have a saying over on EagleTalk about the group "brain cell." Many times, I do not think it's a joke.
I am reminded of the Bear Bryant quote: "It is hard to rally around a math class. That is why we have a football team."
Many athletic supporters (literally and metaphorically) see the University as simply necessary for meeting NCAA requirements as a physical location for their atheletes to have a place to live and practice. So why wouldn't they be angry with us? We are distracting them. Ask Horace FLeming. He underestimated their power with IHL. So did we. And our teams aren't even close to being national contenders. BTW Debbie Pollack Bowers is a graduate of our nursing program, Kappa Delta alum, BSN 1975. RN, now top Mary Kay salesperson in U.S. Deanna Farve, former nursing student, USM. Withdrew from nsg program when Bret was drafted and they had first child.
What would the athletic fans say if SFT and crew were to indulge in activities (recruiting irregularities, secret funding of athletes, etc.) which threatened their NCAA status? Just the same thing that the faculty are saying about their academic accreditation status. Perhaps this is not clear to them.
If USM loses SACS accrediattion, will it be in trouble with the NCAA? Can a nonaccreditated school field NCAA teams? If not the the Eagletalk people better start pulling for the faculty and fast.
Are any of you posting there? I tried to look at that board a few weeks ago and I couldn't stand it, although I got a big laugh when somebody referred to the "infamous AAUP board." Good opportunity to do some educating?

Can someone please provide the Eagle Talk site hotlink? Thanks.
If a school loses its regional accreditation, federal funding will be denied. This means that Pell Grants, VA benefits, SEOG, etc. will be denied to aid students to attend the institution as well as any other federal dollars the institution is receiving. This is what causes the death knell for non-accredited institutions. Take a look at any institution that has lost its accreditation. It's not that that NCAA will be upset, it's the fact that the players (many who receive Pell) will not be interested in attending an institution where 1) they will receive no federal financial assistance and 2) their degrees will mean nothing. There is no way for a recruiter to put a positive spin on non-accreditation. And the fact of the matter is that losing regional accrediation means that everything, and I mean everything gets the ax.
I don't see USM losing its accreditation due to the probation but the thing to remember is that it's given the university a black eye and SACS will continue to monitor USM very closely. Their is an institution near me that was also placed on probation at the December meeting. The biggest violation is the biggest of all "lack of institutional integrity." When SACS finds that institutions flat out lie they get a bit angry. At least that wasn't cited with USM.
Edward Waters, a small school in Florida, had its SACS accreditation pulled at the same SACS meeting in December. They were cited for plagurizing their self study. BEWARE!!!
The truth is that an NCAA investigation usually does not involve academics and the NCAA has no authority over academics. SACS involves EVERYTHING an institution does and can, in effect, close the doors of a school.

Heres the link to the infamous EagleTalk board. Just be aware that registration is required & they post your IP address next to every message you put there. (Which may be why the trolls that drift over here from there are so obsessed with IP tracking.) The board moderators can & regularly do ban posters both permanently & for short periods.
If you decide to post there, I strongly recommend using a different nom de guerre.

I belive that one can "lurk" there without signing in. Even if you do only "lurking," but do no "posting," I highly recommend that you take along your BARF BAG.

Thanks Interested Bystander. Very interesting and much worst than I imagined. I'm not convinced we will be out of the woods with SACS even when we do assessment of distant learning. That "lack of institutional integrity" violation label sound like it is made for SFT and his Economic Development program.
