TOPIC: Important 'CoB Mission' Poll --- Please Vote
On the CoB's website, the college's mission --- "Developing Careers" --- is stated. If Grimes' letter to the CoB is supported by Thames/Klumb, that mission will have to change. Which new on do you like most? [74 vote(s)]

No matter how much we may disapprove of SFT, it doesn't justify supporting a twit who has abused his power as Dean and who has accelerated the downward sprial of COB. Just because SFT and HD may not be pals, it doesn't mean HD is trustworthy or worthy of our support. If HD wanted us to know what he he had to say in the four page letter, there is nothing that stops him from publishing it. Is he just using this whole fiasco the stir and try to protect his position? HD should stand on his own merits as a leader rather than allow gossip and fear to control our actions.

Evidence, please. It seems to me that any dean who has reduced the teaching load for new untenured assistants, supported the development of all faculty who could benefit from it, doubled the size of the business advisory council and fought the increased class sizes mandated by the central admin. can't be all bad. I have not received raises or other perks, so guess I am in the group who ought to be disgruntled (as posted on another thread), but comparing his performance to deans at other schools his performance is pretty good. Does he spend time roaming the halls or come to our offices to chat, no, but who could when he is trying to evade the alligators from the dome 24/7.

If Dean Doty releases the letter when told not to do so by Thames and Grimes he can be fired for insubordination. If he releases the letters after receiving an FOA request, he may still be fired but he will be fired for refusing to violate the law requiring him to release the information. It sounds like a good strategy to me and it worked in getting rid of Hanberry who was dumb enough to send an e-mail telling the Deans to violate the law. This has been pointed out another thread by Linda.
The determination of some faculty in COB to attack each other while Rome is burning is truly short sighted and stupid. I take issue with you on suggesting that Dean Doty is not trustworthy, on his abuse of power and the accelerating the decline of CoB you attribute to him. You are correct that CoB is in decline but how much worse would it be without Dean Doty? Many of CoB's problems come from the dome. You have one faculty member who has attacked every administrator who has served within CoB in the last ten years and continues to fight battles from 1995 on a weekly basis with old e-mails taken out of context. A small group of narcisstic faculty are determined to debase every colleague in an effort to raise their stunted stature. Enough is enough, it is time to put aside the petty differences and focus your efforts on regime change in the dome.
There was a rumor circulating when Doty first came that he had been fired from a previous position. Anyone know if this is true? If so, for what reason?

I don't know what your problems are in COB and really don't care. I'm from the liberal arts side of the house and my feeling is that questions and disagreements are appropriate -- particularly in a University. However, it seems to me you are doing exactly what you accuse one professor of doing. You accuse this "one professor" of having "attacked". Now you attack him. That doesn't sound like the unity for which you ask.
By the way, I imagine that SFT and others who support him would say the same thing about us. They would probably say that we are dredging up old grievances.
If you have a problem with one of your colleages, I suggest you take it up with him rather than post snide comments on a board. Isn't that what adults do?
If people have concerns about Doty, they have the right to express them.

astonished, Dean Doty is doing things the way they are done at the truly good universities. A rarity for USM. I fail to understand why anyone could think otherwise - unless they have a personnel axe to grind.

The first sentence in the quote attributed to "astonished" (two posts up) was actually written by "Supporting the wrong person." They both appeared as one posting. I am in total agreement with "astonished."

This is true.
But there is nothing preventing him from releasing the purported 4-page response, unless of course a lot of that response consists of quotes from the original letter.
Question, your point was well made and I heard you. A little of "the kettle calling the pot black" as grandma use to say. A little admonishment can be helpful.
Invictus, while Dean Doty could release his response, a FOI would give him more protection and achieve the same results. Does anyone doubt that Grimes' and Doty's letters will be release in the near future?
As I said on another thread, let's remember who the real bad guy is here: Shelby Freakin' Freland Thames. I'm willing to give Doty the benefit of the doubt at this time...who knows what he has planned? Only time will tell (as the 80s supergroup Asia would say!).
Those that call for caution regarding the CoB dean know what they are writing about. It would be wrong to make him out as 100% pure when a careful and deliberate inquiry of business faculty remaining will reveal his personality is very similar to Shelby's. Neither can meet the measure of being completely professional in their actions and their decisions. Ask one staffer who was fired by Doty the day he arrived on campus, ask instructors on the coast that were terminated, ask those that he is pressuring to retire as quickly as possible, ask business faculty about his desire for a 15 hour major, ask questions of those you know in the CoB. You might be surprised how many times he has contradicted himself on issues. I contacted those I still know and got ready answers. Glad I made the decision to leave before it starting falling apart under Gunther.

Those Business faculty who used up a lot of bandwidth over the summer making allegations about Dean Doty on this board... and are going after him now... need to consider the following question:
Would you rather have Dean Doty doing whatever Shelby Thames and Ken Malone (via Jay Grimes) are ordering him to do?
Or are you going to support a Dean who is trying to save your College from destruction?
If you don't support him, you can count on his being replaced with someone who will carry out Thames and Malone's orders.
