Mr. Wonderful's Citation de la Semaine: February 6

What a busy week for the selection committee! On two different occasions we thought  that it might be necessary to add a temporary member just to keep up with the flurry of board activity during the past seven days.  But #1 Groupie volunteered for overtime duty, and that allowed the composition of the committee to remain intact. Before proceeding to the main event, we have two "special awards" to present. These two quotes didn't quite make the final cut, but the commitee would like to acknowledge their merit:

Understatement of the Week: Portabello Mushroom - "The IHL does not seem to be taking this thing very seriously."

Rejoinder of the week:  Ram - In response to Golden Eagles Forever's statement which read "you professors make me sick . . . . I never see teachers at ball games so you must not even care enough to support the athletes that are in your classes. if its not in the library or your offices you must not care. pitiful," Ram quickly responded: "The problem is that ONLY the faculty seem to care about what goes on in the library and the classroom. And, yes, you are right: it is pitiful."

And now . . . . for the Super Sunday edition of the Citation de la Semaine awards:

1st Runner Up:  Critical Mass - "Without a doubt, the fight is now and always has been about the survival of this University. We are quickly reaching the point where even more concrete forms of demonstration are necessary. The pursuit of knowledge is the central point of any university. When we are being told to not engage in such, words cannot describe the concerns that come to mind. All faculty need to rise up and speak to what is apparently happening in the COB; the same can happen to all of us. The Council of Chairs should be up in arms over such action by the Administration; I can't even refer to them as our Administration any longer. I keep saying the days can't get any darker here, and they continue to do so.

The Winner: 1/USMITT -  "This will seal our SACS fate. When the accreditors find out that the university's policy is to discourage research and inquiry, they will yank our accreditation quicker than Shelby can say 'whirl class'. If IHL doesn't believe this is enough to terminate Shelby F$*$#*% THames, then the Holocost didn't happen, Neil Armstrong said 'one small step' in Hollywood and Rosa Parks never got on that bus."

Thank you, Portabello Mushroom, for you cautious understatement; and to you, Ram, for timely rejoinder.  And, of course, congratulations to the winners, Critical Mass and to 1/USMITT, for the manner with which you addressed this most recent in a continuing array of tragic issues at USM.

I'm very sorry, Portabello, but the beautiful suitable-for-framing certificates are awarded by that "other" committee. Outside of the international recognition you receive through this message board, the Citation de la Semaine committee gives nothing tangible to its weekly winners. There will be a tangible award (the "Mr. Wonderful Lifetime Achievement Award") that we would like to present at the frequently mentioned "coming out celebration" - to the one post/poster the committee believes has exerted the greatest influence on either of the two message boards. All posters are eligible for that competition. I have not yet seen the actual object, but #1 Groupie and 80's Lady tell me that it is neither papyrus nor polymer.
