If the events of "Black Friday" February 4th are to be believed (and they are so over the top that I do believe them), AND if IHL refuses to act immediately, then there are 2 lines of thought
1) Shelby is acting for IHL, with their approval, and they are changing the face of higher ed in this state forever in the name of fiscal conservatism. USM will no longer be a university. If this is true, then IHL board members are lilly-livered cowards if they don't stand up and say what they are doing. If they continue this underhanded, undermining of our university without telling the people of south Mississippi--taxpayers--the truth, then none of them are worthy of public service. The legislature, the Faculty Senate, the AAUP, athletic supporters, parents, students--hell everybody south of I20 should stand up and scream.
2) If Shelby is doing these things without explicit IHL approval, then the board is guilty of gross mismanagement and they are incompetent and they need to go. We are taxpayers, we are parents, we are students, we are state employees, we are the business community that depends on USM. We do not deserve this.
The following is a quote from author Tom Clancy following 9/11:
"Four planes? That many people willing to die for the same cause at the same time? If any writer had turned in a story like this, the publisher would have just handed it back and said, 'No way. Not believable.' "
As people describe the mismanagement of USM, we get the same disbelief. "No way. Not believable."
Every time there is a challenge to SFT's authority, someone choreographs a pro-SFT letter writing campaign to the IHL board. After the FS call for a new search, I expect his honchos will start up again.
Should not we -- and all of our acquaintances -- be writing to the IHL board too? I have never written, myself. Could someone who has, verify whether correspondence is acknowledged?
I can't help but wonder whether anyone at the IHL board could possibly have the resources to verify names and addresses?
I have heard that Thames has already started having his business contacts call IHL members in his campaign for a second term. Everyone who has friends in business needs to have those friends contact the IHL board and suggest new leadership. If not now -- never?
PR Managers Inc. has a good point. Hearing from members of the business community who are fed up with Thames and worried about the consequences to southern Mississippi of destroying USM will have much more impact on the Board than hearing from faculty members. I remain convinced that some Board members have a standing order to put all correspondence from professors in the circular file.
