Hurricane Preparedness
Permalink Closed

There are lots of new people in our community who are not familiar with hurricanes. This might be a good time to list some tips.

I'll start with the suggestion to fill your gas tanks. When electricity goes out, the pumps don't work. If you have to leave town because of storm damage, there may be no gas available for a hundred miles.

Get some extra cash. When the power is out, credit cards don't work.

I always make sure to fill bathtubs with water to flush the toilet.  It's wise to purchase some rubber stoppers to make sure the bathtub doesn't slowly leak the water out.

(If you don't have a generator, be sure to purchase enough ice so your beer doesn't get hot.smilebiggrin)

Get all your laundry done.

Make your own ice, in tupperware containers and clean water bottles. Leave room for expansion of the ice.

You can also fill the washing machine with water -- it will be clean enough to wash with. Somebody also suggested filling the washer with ice and drinks or beer. Throw a quilt over it for extra insulation.

info, thanks for finding the old threads.

EDIT:

I see I'm repeating myself.  It was weird to read the Hurricane Dean posts from this time last year.
BTW, Hurricane Hattie is moi ~

You are all in my prayers and thoughts right now. If Gustav is anywhere near as bad as Katrina was, I fear for the Gulf Coast Campus. I hope the friendship tree survives again.

Take care my virtual friends, be safe.

Oh lordy, here we go again.

Btw, if you go to somebody else's house, be sure they fill their bathtubs. Ask me how I know!

It is easier to use "duct tape " over the closed drain.
