"I'm not going to please everybody," Thames said. "I wish I could. I wish everybody liked me.... But I have to do what's best for Southern Miss."

I hear that people close to him say that he is genuinely confounded that the faculty will not "communicate" with him. These sources believe he really would try to "do better" if he only knew what people wanted from him.

He said something like that on WDAM the other day, too. He added something to the effect of, "I tried to do what everybody wanted, but I found out that doesn't work."

I have been trying to remember the time that SFT tried to do what "everybody wanted", but it still escapes my recollection. Now I wish he would just do what is best for Southern Miss.

Whatever you do, don't encourage Shelby Thames to do what's good for Southern Miss.

In Thames' mind, Southern Miss=Shelby Thames.

He may genuinely fail to comprehend that no one else makes this equation.

Agreed. My original post actually had a concluding paragraph where I wondered whose judgement about "what is best" SFT might regard. I decided that was obvious: he believes that only he knows what is best.

Of course, I think it would be best if he would fall on his sword. But I thought it would be tacky to suggest it.
