I think Mr. Klumb's statement, below, is very significant.
"I can appreciate their concern for the university and their concern for the future direction of the university," Klumb said in response to the resolution. "I appreciate that they have positioned themselves to help us move forward for the resolution of the problems in regards to the accreditation issues."
Whether Thames, who took over as Southern Miss president in May 2002, gets a new contract next year remains to be seen, Klumb said."

Be careful what you read from Klumb statement. Regarding SFT contract NOT being renewed, I'll believe it when I see it............

I hear you Green Hornet. It's just that this past week Klumb sure hasn't sounded like the old Klumb. Has he learned diplomacy in a couple of months? SFT won't go without a fight, so I too will believe it when I see it.
A day after the University of Southern Mississippi Faculty Senate asked the state College Board to begin a search immediately for a new president, Shelby Thames says he has no plans to retire next yearwhen his contract expires.
I find this language interesting. Sometimes there are little slips of the tongue with Shelby Thames that can be quite telling. For example, in a recent PUC meeting, he said that the library alterations on the coast weren't intended ONLY for the eMBA program. This meant there WAS a plan for an eMBA program - which the administration was denying.
I wondered when I read "when his contract expires" if Thames has been told already his contract for president won't be renewed. In this little piece, Thames does not talk about remaining in the dome, but about retiring. Nobody, including Faculty Senate, has asked he retire, only leave the job as President at return to faculty.
Very perceptive Amy. I too remember his slips. I guess it’s hard to keep all of the lies straight without a personal assistant and printed notes to read.

Where is Lisa? She should be crafting statements for him.
Isn't PERS retirement based on the last several years of employment? Or is it based on the highest pay received? I believe Dr. Lucas took a cut in retirement pay to serve as interim president.
If Thames can leave and draw retirement based on $150K, maybe he will step down and go back to research. Please, please let it be true.

Having researched retirement recently, I can tell you it is based on the highest 48 months pay or best 4 years. I would suspect that SFT's base will be much more that the $150K salary. Don't you think he is making something on the side? You also get credit for 240 hours of unpaid leave at the pay rate when retiring.
