The University of Southern Mississippi would like to thank you for sending us your college admission test results. A successful university experience often depends on a student's participation in every aspect of campus life, and at Southern Miss we recognize how your life outside the classroom will influence your life inside the classroom. We ensure a warm welcoming community where you can find your place, create new friendships and connections, and make a difference.

Southern Miss offers a healthy dose of school spirit for students, and traditions here run deep. From the first day you step on campus you become indoctrinated into the history and traditions of those who have passed before, and with more than 230 student groups, getting involved is easy. From Greek life to service learning, student government to intramurals, there is a group or activity where you can become involved.

The University of Southern Mississippi is rich in history and tradition, but we continue to change and improve, keeping an eye on the future and a step ahead of the competition.  Southern Miss is the only dual-campus university in the state, with two campuses and five teaching and research sites across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We are ranked among the top 150 universities in the nation by the Carnegie Foundation; we are a nationally accredited research-extensive institution offering approximately 180 undergraduate, graduate, and specialist's degree programs.  Our university serves as the educational home to more than 16,000 students from almost every state and 60 countries, but features a student-focused learning community where each person matters.

Our students tell us that they are attracted to Southern Miss not only because of its excellent academic programs and campus life, but also because of the friendliness and the personal attention they receive from an accessible, caring faculty and staff.  Newsweek Kaplan College Catalog 1999 lists Southern Miss as a top school in six categories, including "Schools Offering the Maximum amount of Individual Academic Attention."

We invite you to learn more about The University of Southern Mississippi, become a part of our family, and embrace the opportunities we can afford you. To ask questions about our university, its programs, and scholarships, or to visit, please call the Office of Admissions at (601) 266-5000. Until you are able to visit, check out our Web site at www.usm.edu.  I look forward to meeting with you soon and welcoming you to the Southern Miss family.

Very truly yours,

Shelby F. Thames

President

I see from this letter that we've exceeded 16,000. We'll meet our 20,000 goal before you can say Jack Robinson.

Baloney, Phoney!! More lies. And just because you say it a zillion times, doesn't make it one bit more truel.

I hope some of you with connections can call this to the attention of the Carnegie Foundation. They ought to sue. It should also be brought to the attention of SACS. What an outrageous load of claptrap.

a digression--some local people wish their children had received any such letter from USM. although i have two at USM, they never received such a letter (and both are very bright). local people (including faculty) said USM tended to ignore local students.

This has been a problem for many years.  Well over a decade ago, I used to keep separate files for each college that contacted me.  There were many thick files from schools in MS, LA, and AL, but I had to actually drive to campus to get an application for USM.

I had never heard of the Newsweek Kaplan College Catalog.

I found on the Clemson site:   "Each year, Kaplan teams up with Newsweek to provide detailed admissions information on more than 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide." and "Clemson has been recognized in the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog 2002 as among top schools in the nation that offer the best value for your tuition dollar, that are academically challenging, that are hot and trendy and that have the best Web sites."

From the Miami (Ohio) site: The 2004 Kaplan-Newsweek College Catalog lists Miami as one of 27 "hidden treasures—terrific schools that deserve more national recognition" and as one of 70 schools that "offer the best value for your tuition dollar."

So the 1999 version that SFT cites in his letter is, at best, a few years out of date.  Looks like "Southern Miss" has dropped off of another list.

With all of the faculty departures, and the current emphasis on distance learning and economic development, is it any wonder that USM may no longer be among those Schools Offering the Maximum amount of Individual Academic Attention?

all three of my kids graduated h'burg area schools, top 10% class, good act scores, not even a letter from usm!!    fortunately they all went onto other universities on academic scholarships and did well

i later ask someone in adminstration why lsu could recruit here and offer scholarships and usm made little or no effort for local students, the reply was simply "most local students dont view usm as an option, only attend out of necessity"

Is it any wonder that USM is still among the schools offering degrees?
