Regular Season: USM has 9 remaining men's basketball games:
USF USF has been struggling and have turned in a few less-than-stellar performances. The Bulls are last in C-USA at this point in the season, but Reed Green gives USM an edge, though this one could go either way. Marquette Look for Diener and Co. to light the Eagles up in Milwaukee. @Tulane Another that could to either team, though Tulane has a slight edge at home. Houston The Eagles dropped a 10-point decision to the Cougars at Houston, but the score didn't reflect how the game went overall. Look for more of the same when the 'Cats visit Nitchampburg. @Cincinnati USM couldn't beat Cincinnati at Cincinnati with nuclear weapons. Memphis Calipari, again underachieving, will hop on board the bus, as the Tigers will whip USM at home. @ECU This is a coin flip, with the home edge to ECU. @Charlotte Charlotte (currently 14-4 overall and 5-2 in C-USA action) is 3rd in C-USA and is 3-0 at home in C-USA play. USM falls here, too. TCU USM has one date with TCU, and it could be close, though TCU may have an NIT berth riding on this game, while USM will probably not.
Regular Season Recap: Best Possible Scenario: USM goes 4-5 through the last 9 games, going into the C-USA Tournament at 14-14 overall.
Most Probable Scenario: USM goes 2-7 through the last 9 games, going into the C-USA Tournament at 12-16 overall.
Worst Scenario: USM goes 0-9 through the last 9 games, going into the C-USA Tournament at 10-18 overall.
Post Season: If the season ended today, USM would be watching the C-USA Tournament from Nitchampburg. Even if the Eagles do get into the C-USA Tourney, they will likely be "one-and-done," which means they will likely end the season at either 12-16 or 12-17 or worse. Don't expect an NIT berth from the squad this year.
you professors make me sick. you bad mouth all athletics and run down everything that is good about a great university. i never see teachers at ball games so you must not even care enough to support the athletes that are in your classes. if its not in the library or your offices you must not care. pitiful

I don't know where you sit at football games, but I had season tickets for years in a section of the stadium that was almost all faculty/staff. They were there for every game.

First of all, everybody on this board is not a professor. For example, I am an alum of about 20 years.
Second, not everybody bad mouths athletics. Sure, everyone on this board agrees that athletics are subordinate to academics. But that is not the same as running down "a great university." If you really believe USM is a great university, I will not try to convince you otherwise. But I would like for you to think about why you think that it is. We all just wish that it was so.
I have seen faculty at ball games. And at concerts. And at plays. And at art exhibits. But I think the main way faculty support the students is by teaching them well, not by showing up for what is essentially paid entertainment.
The problem is that ONLY the faculty seem to care about what goes on in the library and the classroom. And, yes, you are right: it is pitiful.
I thought the post was pretty unbiased. Anybody that follows basketball would probably have a similar take on the remaining games Southern plays. Some people just don't want to hear that their team has turned out to be less than they had expected.

GEF, your logic defies belief. There's not enough hours in the entire academic year for faculty members to attend every extra-curricular activity in which students in their classes engage. Why should the faculty pay more attention to the athletes than to the band, or the ROTC, or the drama students?
golden eagle fever--i attend athletic events that i enjoy, probably wouldn't be the same ones as you. i do, however, provide athletes (having had a child who was a pretty good jock in h.s.) what they will need most in this world--a good education. most won't go to the NFL, NBA, etc. they're going to have to make it with their brains.

That's just plain wrong. Not only are many faculty members season ticket holders, but the level of support among the faculty for USM sports was greater than at many universities until very recently. Even if half the 600 faculty were regulars at sports events, they would not be visible among a football crowd of 30,000. Perhaps you missed the positive discussion of Jeff Bower on the board.
You are also dead wrong about USM being a great university. That has been amply documented by U.S. News and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Right now USM is a distant third among Mississippi public universities, and Mississippi is near the bottom. When you and your alumni friends succeed in running off another couple hundred faculty members, you'll get the picture. Just keep bashing the faculty, and it will all become clear.

I can not stand by and let this misinformation be set forth by the ignorant.
Dont you ever listen to our very much loved Athletic Director, referred to with much affection as Mr G?
Mr G has told us all the reason the low attendance prevails at USM, sorry Southern Miss is the lack of a "positive fan experience", i.e. luxury seating, modern restrooms, refurbished concession areas(for the blue collar crowd). I wont go into the need for exquisite locker rooms for the visiting teams.
You just wait Mr Golden Eagle Forever, when the Rock(Roberts Stadium, I thought the guy was a pretty good QB, but why name the stadium in his honor?) and the GreenHouse(James Green is gone, give it up!!) there will be so many fans having positive experiences we will be looking for much larger venues hopefully with monikers that mean something to our university. Maybe the Plastic Place or something befitting our new online/economic development presence in athletics(I couldnt bring myself to mention academics).
If you should have questions please contact Mr G or any of his many assistants, associates or directors that have set forth a real strategic plan.

Pardon me, Luxury Plus. Please allow me to suggest a modification to your recommended "Plastic Place" name. I suggest the name "Plastic Palace." The name Plastic Palace would, no doubt, be readily adopted by the TV media. I can hear it now: "Next week, basketball fans, our beloved Notre Dame will be playing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi - at the feared and dreaded Plastic Palace.
