Player earned fan's respect

This letter is regarding the article announcing the departure of Jasper "Smooth" Johnson.

I am deeply saddened and disappointed in the way he is leaving the Southern Miss basketball team - a young man with his ability who clearly has given much to transform himself into a remarkable player. This is a player who has an uncanny ability to score anywhere on the floor.

Jasper sacrificed his game as a perimeter shooter to become a very good post and team player. He performed valiantly against true centers in and out of Conference-USA, displaying a great deal of heart and character.

What saddens me even more is that coach Larry Eustachy, rather than recognizing that this young man night after night was asked to battle against teams with a host of giants, would deny him his senior year and claim he lacks mental toughness.

Most knowledgeable fans know that for the past three seasons Jasper has had no help inside. Coach Eustachy may have inherited a team that was undersized and not as talented as a lot of others, but lack of mental toughness is a poor choice of words for those who have been watching these kids play year after year.

I have been a fan for the past seven years and have attended nearly every game at Reed Green and listened to most away games on the radio. I have witnessed Jasper punish opposing players inside and out.

These teams knew that Jasper was our only legitimate option. It just hurts to know that we are his only option.

I just want to thank Jasper for the hard work and dedication that he gave to Southern Miss.

It is a disgrace that we could not have shown our appreciation in a better way - like on "senior night." I look forward to winning games and enjoying a high level of basketball, but not at the expense of the few kids who have given their best while attending this university.

It will be interesting next season to see all these new scholarship players with so much mental toughness. I hope it's not the coaches who are lacking mental toughness.

Steve Willis,

Hattiesburg

Check out the article on LE.  He is the most egocentric coach ever heard of; there is more "I" and "me" in his statements than ever seen.

Tim Floyd: quite possibly the worst coach in any team sport, ever.

Steve Willis:  I appreciate your words of support for a deserving student athlete and I respect you for writing this letter.  You and everyone your words should understand the siege that faculty and staff have endured under the Thames administration over these past two and a half agonizing years.  Bad management is demoralizing wherever it is found.

Well, I'll tell you something: Tim Floyd may be no John Wooden, but Larry Eustachy couldn't carry Tim Floyd's jock strap. I wonder why Floyd gets high profile jobs and poor Larry boy is in Nitchampburg. Maybe it's because Floyd's not a pathetic alchy loser who chases young skirts and treats people like dog excrement. Maybe.

Eustachy won with Floyd's talent at Iowa State, then lost with his own. Eustachy can't even measure up to James Green's worst years. Green's teams never got whipped at home by 40+ points. In fact, they hardly ever lost in Reed Green under James Green.
