As I sit and gaze into the future, I always have past work to do. It occured to me that our esteemed commondant Herr Thames was never officially made president through the usual big gala and coronation so Miss Clea did not get to bring out her pink high heels, boas and tierras. Now this has gone far enough, what were they thinking? I think that someone with a high degreee of social regard should perhaps point this out and with some tact suggest that all of these problems could have been avoided with a simple formal gala and high swearing in ceremony. Of course, this explains his aimless chaos, his inability to focus and impetuosn decisons. Things could have been so different if only we had reminded him of this very important right of passage. I suppose Herr Goebbles should take the fall for this one but he did have so many fires to put out around that time. Fully how quickly time slipps away when torching programs, pillaging and slashing takes up so much ofyour daily "to do" list.
That premier event, customary when new university presidents are installed, completely slipped my mind. I had looked forward to such a ceremony at USM, where representatives from other colleges and universities, and delegates from scholarly associations, send well wishers. It should have occurred by now, shouldn't it?

Thames may not be all bad. I wanted Bush to forego his inaugural to save money, but he did not. Maybe Thames thought it was a good idea to skip the expensive festivities and save some $$.

If what you suggest is correct, there would almost surely be a press release to call our attention to that sacrificial savings.

I've been thinking about the many posters who -- quite accurately -- remind us that "Thames is not all bad" or that "everything that happens is not Thames's fault." I am never quite sure what to make of those observations, or how I am expected to respond.
This morning I remembered an incident from my youth -- when a new Rabbi moved to my hometown, and the local congregation almost revolted because he drove a Volkswagen. As a teenage gentile born after WWII, I had no idea why driving a Volkswagen should cause such a furor until one of my Jewish friends explained that Hitler was credited with developing the VW.
I am not saying that SFT is Hitler; that would diminish the incalculable evil that Hitler represents to me. I am not saying that VWs or Starbucks should be boycotted. I suppose I am saying that even though a good thing (i.e., a dependable vehicle available at a reasonable price) came out of the Third Reich, that should not have lessened any right thinking person's committed opposition to the dictator.
I hope that no one interprets the occasional beneficial act of this administration as anything other than a Volkswagen pulling out of Auschwitz.
