So, the area outside Green Coliseum is known as Nitchampburg to honor the NIT Championship won by the men's basketball team in 1987. The men's program has made it to the NCAA only twice, getting ousted in the first round both times.
The women's team has, however, gotten to the Sweet 16 (in 1994). This is a feat much larger than an NIT championship. In fact, what was going on with the women's program from the early to mid 1990s greatly eclipses anything the men ever did.
With that said, and given the fact that both the men and women play in Green Coliseum, why did the tailgating area have to honor relatively unimportant men's team record when the women did much greater things, and more recently?
Is is because SFT is a chauvinist? Is it because not honoring something the men did would be a failure to "buy into" Eustachy (we know he hates that).
It's clear to me that the whole system is slanted in favor of men. Also, notice that "Nitchampburg" wasn't created under the previous coach. I wonder why?
SFT's stomach must have really been turning this weekend knowing that a celebration of 30 years of womens athletics at USM was going on. I bet he stayed away from most of it, just like he would to avoid the plague or some retirement ceremony.
I'm sorry, but Nitchampburg is a brainchild of the Alumni Association. You will have to look there for the chauvinist. I guess Sweetsixteenburg didn’t sound as good.

It's nice to know the Alumni Association is on top of the really important things.

What if the men's 1987 basketball team had squared off against the women's team from 1994? How would that have gone? How far would the women's team have advanced playing the teams the men's team defeated to win the NIT in 1987?
I remember back in the '70's and '80's, when junk sports shows were popular, that when men and women competed head-to-head the women were often given outrageous advantages to make them competitive. For example, in a 100 yard dash, the woman might be given a 30 yead head start. But if the women won the race, she celebrated as if the competiton had been a fair one.
Why is it in 2005 that we still have separate men's and women's teams anyway? Why not have one basketball team made up of the best players without regard to gender? Then issues regarding "women's" sports being secondary to "men's" sports would simply vanish.
By the way, are women prohibited from trying out for the "men's" team?

I betcha that if Jeff Bower could find a 310 lb, 6'6" female defensive tackle, he's sign her in a heartbeat. Good grief, she'd probably scare the poor guy who was supposed to block her half to death!
But while I'm being so serious about it, at least USM has the "Lady Eagles." Good grief, MSU has "Lady Dawgs." There's another name for that...
Let me expose your trick, Mr. Wizard. Your attempt to throw this thread off is unsuccessful! I believe the point being made is that if you're going to manufacture athletic traditions out of thin air, you'd better come up with 1) something that is worthy of remembrance and 2) a name that couldn't be bested by a kindergarten class from Oak Grove Lower Elementary School.
More to the point, that NIT Championship simply meant that USM's basketball was the 65th best team in the nation that year. Why not just call it "We're#65in1987-ville"?

It's for the same reason there are weight divisions in boxing. There are physical differences. To say that a champion middle weight boxer is second rate because a journeyman heavy weight can beat him is nonsense, just like your post.

This is the only point of the original post to which I was responding.

I was making a remark in response to an assertion regarding the importance of an appearance in the women's NCAA tournament versus that of an appearance in the men's NIT. I was not engaging in trickery or attempting to derail the thread.
More to the point, that NIT Championship simply meant that USM's basketball was the 65th best team in the nation that year. Why not just call it "We're#65in1987-ville"?
This obviously assumes that the best 64 teams go to the NCAA. It would be remarkable if this occured.

I would suspect that a more essential reason for the existence of weight divisions in boxing is for the safety of the fighters, so you have picked a poor example. And when Billy Conn nearly took the heavyweight title from Joe Louis, Conn actually weighed 167, a mere two pounds over the middleweight limit. Competitive bouts between boxers from different weight classes could be made, but it probably isn't a good idea.
But to stick with the boxing analogy, fighters in the lower weight divisions tend to make far less money in the sport than their larger and frequently less talented peers. I believe that this is somewhat unfair, but I haven't heard any charges of size discrimination.
It's clear that going to the Men's sweet 16 every year is better than getting deep into the men's NIT every year. That said, I would say that the women's sweet 16 feat of 1994 is a bigger deal than that 1987 NIT championship. Whether or not the name of the tailgate area has anything to do with disc. may be another issue.
Fact: USM hired two new head basketball coaches last year: Eustachy and Lee-McNelis. Fact: USM named the new tradition tailgating area "NITChampburg, MS" Fact: The Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles are a combined 17-22 this season Fact: In 1987, the Golden Eagles were the best team in the nation not invited to the NCAA tournament Fact: In 1994, the Lady Eagles finished no worse than 16th in the women's tournament. Fact: The NCAA men's tournament takes 65 seeds (64 in 1987), while the women's tournament takes 32.
What this means is that, at worst, the Lady Eagles were the 32nd best team in 1994 and played their way to no worse than 16th by the end of the tournament. In 1987, the Golden Eagles were not able to make a field of 64 teams for the NCAA. Dou you not see the difference there?
Also, here are some more facts:
Fact: SFT fired all deans in January 2003, most of whom were named by his predecessor(s). Fact: SFT Reorganized the university from its existing structure to the Frankenstein monster we have today. Fact: SFT has refused to honor agreements with faculty that were negotiated prior to his presidency. Fact: SFT has painted everything on campus "USM beige" with new, odorless paint. Fact: We're about to get new light poles in front of the Dome. Fact: We got rid of the old turf on the football field so that we could get new artificial turf. Fact: The International building was built with monies not from ED, then the building is announced to house ED. Fact: SFT is renaming streets on campus from their age-old names to new, glitzier names. Fact: SFT has driven the once-proud Arts programs into virtual ruin while elevating Polymer Science and ED to unwarranted heights. Fact: We now are partway through a renovation of the Student Union. Fact: We now have a Starbucks in the library, a place that, anywhere else in the world, does not allow food or drinks inside. Fact: We have huge (unwanted) banners hanging from dorms. Fact: There have been numerous houses torn down to make gravel parking lots. Fact: The name of the faculty newsletter has been changed from its prior name to the Eagle's Eye Fact: SFT instituted email monitoring policies on campus. Fact: We have stupid new athletics "traditions" like SMTTT and Nitchampburg.
Does anyone see a pattern here? Why does it seem that everything old must go in favor of a new SFT idea? Doesn't it seem odd to anyone else that everything will be totally different than it was before SFT? If you graduated in 1995 and came back for the first time today, would you recognize the place? Is that a way to build affinity for one's institution, to remove all memories of old times?
Fact: USM hired two new head basketball coaches last year: Eustachy and Lee-McNelis.
Thank goodness. Both programs were dying a slow death.
Fact: USM named the new tradition tailgating area "NITChampburg, MS"
Good idea to have a tailgating area. Stupid name.
Fact: The Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles are a combined 17-22 this season
To be expected with the little talent left on both teams. Check back in a couple of years.
Fact: In 1987, the Golden Eagles were the best team in the nation not invited to the NCAA tournament
As everyone knows, the best 64 teams in the country are not invited to the NCAA tournament. This was a great accomplishment at the time and still ranks as the highlight for the basketball program.
Fact: In 1994, the Lady Eagles finished no worse than 16th in the women's tournament.
A great accomplishment. Hopefully our new coach will do even better in the future.
I addressed this issue above.

Yes, who cares about increasing security with better lights.
Fact: We got rid of the old turf on the football field so that we could get new artificial turf.
Great improvement over the prior field conditions. Most if not all of the money was donated. Allows area high schools and youth football programs to use the field.
Fact: The International building was built with monies not from ED, then the building is announced to house ED.
Fact: SFT is renaming streets on campus from their age-old names to new, glitzier names.
One of the new street names is Kay James Drive, after the great women's basketball coach.
Fact: SFT has driven the once-proud Arts programs into virtual ruin while elevating Polymer Science and ED to unwarranted heights. Fact: We now are partway through a renovation of the Student Union.
What is the problem with that?
Fact: We now have a Starbucks in the library, a place that, anywhere else in the world, does not allow food or drinks inside. Fact: We have huge (unwanted) banners hanging from dorms. Fact: There have been numerous houses torn down to make gravel parking lots.
And what is the problem with tearing down dilapidated houses?
Fact: The name of the faculty newsletter has been changed from its prior name to the Eagle's Eye Fact: SFT instituted email monitoring policies on campus. Fact: We have stupid new athletics "traditions" like SMTTT and Nitchampburg.
The "facts" I didn't comment on, I either agree with or have no opinion.

Did you fail to read the questions at the end of the post?
I do not think all these changes are necessarily bad; however, change for change's sake is what we're seeing here, in my opinion. Also, in our current budgetary crunch, can you explain spending money on items like new paint or light poles when the old paint was fine and the old light poles could be repaired?

Nice name calling. I didn't say that I agreed with everything that has happened under Thames, far from it.

My View, wouldn't you at least admit that a $40+ million Student Union is a little beyond a smart use of taxpayer dollars, especially for a relatively small commuter college in a state as poor as MS?

I think you will find that much of the cost is funded by student fees that have been collected over several years. By the way, this project was started during Horace Flemming's term.

I haven't seen it in the newspaper yet but Richard Giannini made the announcement during this past weekend's celebration of women's athletics. Coliseum Drive from Montague to MK Turk circle will be renamed Kay James Drive.
quote: Originally posted by: My View " Coliseum Drive from Montague to MK Turk circle will be renamed Kay James Drive."
What's the backstory here? I thought Kay James was a classy lady who got fired. Now she is being honored? Is this just a result of two different athletic administrations, or has the Ministry of Truth been at it again?
There's nothing wrong with the old light poles. Mader and Moore just needed a project, like buying 3000 chairs last summer, to prove that they're doing something for their salaries.
The paint going up on Joseph Greene is Benjamin Moore. Overweening Pride Paint wouldn't last through the spring.
The streets being fixed are around the Admin. Building, next to the Polymer Building, and the ones SFT intends to sell off. Other streets, like those in student areas, remain and will remain a mess. "Our most important possessions" aren't that important. If safety is an issue, start in the student quads and the gravel parking lots.
SFT refuses to put speed bumps back on campus or even the rumble strips that were promised when he ordered the speed bumps to be removed. The rumor is that the gnome can't stand having his bridge work rattled as he speeds off campus.

So, this is what it all comes down to? Shelby is wreaking havoc on the Business School because they painted with the wrong kind of paint???
No, he just displaced them for a month in August 2003 to repaint walls that didn't need repainting and again in 2004-2005 to repaint trim on Joe Greene Hall that will look like a slimy green mess come summer. Again, this is simply a campaign to remake the university in his image, covering all the old with his newer, more Shelby-esque vision.
