Notes from a leadership conference my child attended:
"J.C. Stehle, after analyzing many surveys, found that the principle causes of unrest among workers are actions good leaders can avoid. They are listed in the order of their importance:
1. Failure to give credit for suggestions. 2. Failure to correct grievances 3. Failure to encourage. 4. Criticizing employees in front of other people. 5. Failure to ask employees their opinions. 6. Failure to inform employees of their progress. 7. Favoritism.
And a good leader, an unforgettable leader should possess these qualities:
1. They see themselves as their brother and sister's keepers.
2. They look for gifts, talents, skills and abilities in others.
3. They help others become aware of their gifts.
4. They know they can change lives.
5. They do not allow others to waste their lives.
6. They love their work.
7. They combine strong interpersonal skills with humor to connect.
8. They are lifetime learners.
9. They are answering a call. (and it isn't the phone)
10. They are positive people.
11. They persist in their high expectations.
12. They know (and use) the most powerful motivator-----ENCOURAGEMENT.
I heard these while attending a workshop, and they are so true of people who you do not forget. Too bad that the administration (top level) at USM hasn't heard these words.
