What ever happened to limiting duplication of programs? I understand the need to duplicate basic core programs, but how many colleges of business do we need in this state? How many colleges of engineering/building science/whatever? In my opinion, the IHL should reduce funding to MVSU...like to zero. I cannot believe what I'm reading; maybe USM should lower admissions standards further so it can capture some of the growth from MVSU, Alcorn, etc.

RE: MS Valley State increases enrollment nearly 100%
If I understand the article, enrollment has increased by 1800 over the last six years, or an average of only 300 per year. That would have been a 13% increase the first year and an average of only a tad over 10% growth per year for the entire six year period.

Don't forget that if an institution begins with a smaller baseline enrollment, the actual numeric increase necessary to show large percent gains is correspondingly smaller.
For USM to report a 10% increase, it has to enroll 1,500 new students. For MVSU to report the same increase, it only has to snag 400.
Another factor (unaddressed in the C-L article) is that state appropriations have decreased dramatically over the past 5 years. Is MVSU still being "formula funded" for 1,800 students, or is it being funded for 4,000 students at about half of what the per-student rate was 6 years ago? My bet is that this is what is really going on: MVSU is receiving the same amount of state funding it received 6 years ago; had it not grown so much, it would be receiving half as much.
Just my

Teaser? Not really. I never suggested it was in one year. How ever you look at it, that is tremendous growth in six years - do any other Mississippi campuses come close?

You are probably closer to the truth than you suspect. My guess is that a lot of students who end up at Valley were not accepted at USM or one of the other "comprehensive" universities.
I have heard that USM's black student population has quite a large proportion from the Delta, while white students tend to be from south Mississippi.
It would be interesting to know what portion of MVSU's new freshmen each year did not list Valley as their "first choice" & were not accepted at USM.

Invictus, for what it's worth, in my two freshman sections I had about 35% black students, and most were from the Jackson area and points south. I don't think I had anybody from the Delta. One student from Louisiana was extremely poorly prepared, but was an athlete (and a very nice, smart kid.) On a percentage basis, my black students were about as well-prepared as the white students. Interestingly, a lot of the black female students were very, very sharp and had an "edge" -- a sort of drive and ambition that I found invigorating. Some of these young women are going to be a force to contend with in the future, especially the three or four who are headed to law school.
I love that you taught these students and seemed to care so passionately as you were doing so. There is an important place for qualified adjunct instructors in a university (and it's not to serve on dissertation committees for buy a degree programs). I am appalled that that you were both paid and treated so poorly. Another loss.
Thanks for the kind comments, but let's be clear that my pay and treatment were not unique to me and were not at the hands of my department. ALL adjuncts are grossly underpaid and ill-treated. The people in my department could not have nicer or more helpful.

While I agree with you about the schools of business/engineering/etc, I think it is important to properly fund the general A&S degree programs at schools like MVSU and ensure they are successful.
Most of MVSU's students are economically-disadvantaged minority commuter students who would not have had the chance to attend college in another area of the state. Programs like MVSU's teacher prep/education programs and social work degree programs are excellent and actually beneficial ways of "development" in these areas plus they fill a critical need. I've always been a firm believer in ensuring widespread access to education.
Now whether MVSU needs a business school....

LVN, I didn't mean to suggest that black students who are accepted at USM are not as well prepared as the white students. In fact, I have been told that USM may attract more "high ability" black students (proportionately) than it does "top" white students. To me, this is not a bad thing. It's a very good thing (except that USM ought to be snagging higher ability students, period, without regard for complexion).
It's not the black students who attend USM I was talking about anyway. It's the ones who aren't accepted at USM that end up somewhere else.

It would be interesting to see an enrollment-by-county report disaggregated by undergraduate class, race & gender. I don't think there's such a thing in the factbook, though.

You're kidding! I'm pretty sure we reported that in our semesterly "Statistical Studies" when I was in IR at Memphis. We reported everything else! County break-out by those categories would seem to be important information for recruitment if nothing else.
as a point of comparison MSU's fact book and new pivot table data do not have the data disaggregated by all the factors invictus mentioned. IHL doesn't either.
