Patti,
This was the largest of several student demonstrations last March after Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer were fired and locked out of their offices. It was arranged by students, but several people spoke at it, including Professors Noel Polk and Doug Chambers. I apologize to the students who spoke, as I do not know their names.
FireShelby, how about organizing a "We will never forget" anniversary demonstration?
I agree. A "We will never forget" demonstration ought to be an annual event. We must never forget the evils of which despots such as Shelby Freland Thames are capable. We must proclaim that we do not condone such despotism. In the face of such evil we must not be silent!!!
There was excitement in the air - and a great feeling of community and comradery. Lots of rousing speeches, great (and some very funny) signs, buttons, bumper stickers, and some specially made fundraising t-shirts. There was a sense of hope (this demonstration was early on) that our voices would be heard.....later we learned that (except for VSN) the IHL was deaf. An annual "We Will Never Forget" event would be an important part of remembering our history and what we fought for and how we stood up for what was right. A reminder of what is worth fighting for, and of what we are thankful for when times are better.
FS, thanks so much for posting these. We must never forget the hard work and sacrifice of Frank Glamser, Gary Stringer, and many others (all of the 432 brave faculty members who voted "no confidence" in SFT, for example). I still cannot believe that with that overwhelming vote, SFT is still in the dome. It boggles the mind.
Perhaps the ad we've been talking about should be tied to this annual event...reminding everyone of the no confidence vote, Frank and Gary's sacrifice, the continued abuses of the SFT administration, etc.
I'm just an outsider, but I've been watching USM from the outset of the firings...I think this is an excellent idea!! Remind people what the real issues are and why it's important to remember!
