I occasionally access TigerDroppings.com which is the LSU counterpart of Eagletalk. A posting dated today pertains to people perceived to have the greatest impact on LSU (historical and contemporary, the saints and the sinners). Any nominations for USM along this same dimension?
People who have had the greatest impact on LSU (Posted on 12/26 at 9:26 p.m.)
I hate to say it, but Shelby Thames would need to be on the short list. He has had a LOT of influence on USM -- mostly negative, but the little game doesn't say it has to be a positive influence. He has probably done more in a shorter period of time to damage the reputation of the university than any other single person.
I would certainly put Aubrey Lucas on that list. J. Fred Walker should be on it. And Charlie Brent -- he should be on it, too. (Those are my nominations as a CoST alumnus.)
The dimension having included both positive as well as negative contributions puts me in mind of Time Magazine's policy regarding "Man of the Year" awards. If memory serves, there have been one or two nefarious characters noted by Time over the years. One with the initials A.H. comes to mind most readily.
I'll add two names. Both had a major impact on USM. Not a good impact. Not even the negative impact that Huey Long had on LSU (in a strange sort of way Huey had a positive impact on LSU (by lending his support to LSU rather than to Tulane in some matters). From what I read two of the biggest black sheep in the USM family were:
Theodore Bilbo
W.D. McCain
History will determine whether or not others should be added.

Similar, I take it, to the "Most Wanted" deck from Iraq. Do you have a suggestion as to who should be the Ace of Spades? I believe it was Saddam in the aforementioned deck, was it not?

One would hope that it was USM that had influence over those Favre and Buffet rather than vice versa. They were both talented in their own way, but the taxpayers of Mississippi most certainly gave both of them a great opportunity.

Aubrey Lucas would have been much higher on the list a few years ago.

Oh Yes. Fred Horne. He's already been mentioned once on this board (by Invictus, If I'm not wrong). Fred Horne was sort of like the precursor NightChalker.

Fred's signs were much classier than those banners!
I know this is a little off topic - but oh well . . .
Whatever happened to Night Chalker anyway??
As for the list - from what I understand, Frank and Gary got the student body united in a way that hadn't happened in years and years. Surely, they have been influences.

I was thinking the very same thing just yesterday, Eagle in Cairo. The names of deans and department chairs are quickly forgotten regardless of the magnitude of their contributions. Neither students nor faculty know or care who was yesterday's administrator. Those names will be found only in the dusty archives housed beneath an old building at some remote site. The names of Gary Stringer and Frank Glamser, on the other hand, will endure.
But the good news is that N.C. is now an alumnus (alumna?) and is in a position to write letters, harangue the alumni association, and other assorted useful activities. Onward, Night Chalker!!
