I thought those headlines would get your attention.
I am taking advantage of the holidays to dejunk my files. This mornng I ran across an old Hattiesburg American clipping carrying the title of this thread: 20 USM faculty get 'jobs for life.' As I tossed the clipping into File 13, this thought occurred to me: with headlines like that, it is not surprising that the general public sometimes gets the wrong idea about college faculty members.
I then retrieved and reread the entire clipping and found: "Tenure protects academic freedom and basically guarantees a faculty member lifetime employment," said Academic Vice President David Huffman. "Generally, a faculty member would have to commit a gross misconduct to get fired." A question occurred to me: what "gross misconduct" did Noel Polk, Gary Stringer, and Frank Glamser commit that would cause the current administration to even think about trying to fire any of them? My answer: none whatsoever.
After reconsidering the matter, I think I'll keep that article: in my USModdities and amonolies folder - that folder is so thick now that it won't even be noticed.
Starting **** with university resoursces. Its not their job to be, under false pretenses, digging into the past of an administration member, then starting a PR war. Its their job to be using those university resoursces to research material to spoon feed to the students.

How blind to you really have to be?

Read the hearing transcript, Bozo. No one misrepresented himself.

TheMan - I will challenge your credentials. Just what is it abour your credentials that qualifies you to determine a faculty member's job description? Not your name, please, only your credentials. Be specific.

The bad news is that we cannot change TheMan's mind. The good news is that he will not change my mind either; if anything, he confirms my conviction.
The really good news is that any dispassionate reader of this board can see the obvious differences between the supporters of SFT and those opposed to him. I just hope reporters continue to check in here from time to time.

TheMan - we treat trolls as we do household pets - fondly and affectionately. Every message board needs a troll or two. We have already domesticated one of them. But if an undomesticated one passes through our doors we must engage them in toilet training before keeping them inside unattended. Most trolls become impatient and leave. You are welcome to remain here but only if you behave.

Not quite true, Curmudgeon. There was one guy who misrepresented himself pretty grievously at the hearing. For starters, he presented himself as an experienced university president... Does anybody (TheMan included) harbor any doubts as to what would have happened if Reuben Anderson hadn't called an end to that bogus charade & had Robbie McDuff had the opportunity to rip into a little legal theme called "perjury"?
In TheMan's lexicon, "common sense" means believing what authority figures tell you, no matter how many times they've been shown to be lying. "Common sense" says that money talks & everything else walsk. "Common sense" means siding with an unqualified dunce who is squandering taxpayers' money with his stupid mistakes. "Common sense" means that a guy with a track record of failure as an administrator but who claims to be a successful, opportunistic entrepreneur is obviously the best pick for president of what could be a very good university.
