folks--the HA posted an update about the SACS disclosure statement about USM.  the document linked to is not of the best quality.  this link gets you to the actual SACS document:

the HA story link is:  http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041217/NEWS01/41217004

Thanks, scm.  One relatively bright spot is that there is a third alternative that has not received much attention.  In December 2005, USM can either (1) lose accreditation, (2) be taken off of probation, or (3) continue on probation for good cause for one more year.  I hope we don't need it, but that additional year gives me a little bit of comfort.

Do you think the school might be able to survive another year of this?

can we stand another year of Thames? I've tried to "Keep on the Sunny Side" (a great song i heard personally sung by Doc Watson. I play it routinely to keep my spirits up) but i am beginning to think not.

can the faculty get us reaccredited? i am sure. let them do their business.

Dang, stinky. I had no idea you were into Bluegrass. Cool!

Just a reminder of another rule: an institution may not begin its next self-study cycle while it's on probation. So when the probation is done, there is still at least 2 more years of SACS stuff (assuming no follow-up to the regular self-study report)...

I guess that will take us into almost four more years and it will satisfy the IHL.

I was kinda thinking that a lot of faculty are going to be expert SACS consultants in their own right. It would be an excellent idea if someone could prevail upon Dr. Exline to begin getting as many USM personnel as possible on the SACS list for peer evaluators. The training alone is worth the trouble even if one is never "called" & if one gets to go on a "visit," the learning experience is invaluable.

One problem at USM is that too many folks, especially in the upper admin, aren't that familiar with how other universities do things.

True. But some on the faculty are quite knowledgable about SACS matters. It'll be interested to see if they are asked to participate in this rehabilitation. It'll be even more interesting to see if the higher admistration even knows who among the faculty are knowledgable. Bit some of those capable of helping the most have been thoroughly thrashed and driven off.

Everything I read in the newspapers and read on this message board seems to be "dome centered." I get the impression that the term "administration" at USM refers only to one person.

Shelby Thames makes sure that the USM administration centers on one person.

From the HA: "They were very pleased with the direction we're going," Exline said about how USM is showing improvements."

I'd like to know just how USM is showing "improvements." I'd like for someone to be specific aobut that. The institution appears to be in worse shape than it has been since the days of Theodore Bilbo. The swinging Exit 13 door has hit USM in the butt.

The problem is not just that they don't know how other universities do things, they DON'T CARE.

Furthermore, even if faculty have expertise with SACS, can you imagine that they will run to Shelby's rescue?  I can't believe that he will get any help from existing faculty, given the way he's beaten them down for almost 3 years.

By the way, I chose to use this name because the moniker I wanted was already taken.

And what moniker would that be? Everything has its price.

You must be referring to Paul Orndorff the professional wrestler. If you don't like that name, the name Gorgeous George is still available.

Or, my personal fave, Pretty Boy Rick Flair

rick flair was the "nature boy." one of his favorite slogans: "to be the man, you have to beat the man."

All of this talk about wrestling conjurs us old memories for me. As I recall, the father of Mary Ann Mobley (the former Miss Mississippi who went on to become Miss America) was a professional wrestler known as Rex Mobley.

then there was the "American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. From AWA (Minneapolis) history--try Vern Gagne, Crusher, Dick the Bruiser.

Be patient, Paul Orndorff, somebody will find you an even better wrestling moniker. My personal nomination for you would be "Boogie Woogie Man." His real name is James Valiant, sometimes called the "Boy from New York City" and at other times called "Mr. Handsome." For years his wrestling camp, located at Shawsville, Virginia, has trained some of the most well known wrestlers in the country. You might want to take a lesson or two from him should you decide to go with the Boogie Woogie Man. Jimmy could toughen you up at his camp. You'd be fit as a fiddle, and the moniker would make you a prime candidate for the Miss Information's nom d'Aplomb award when it resumes in January. Check it out (click the hotlink below) -

With respect to SCM, my "theme song" for Uncle Shelby's ESPN (Education Secondary to Polymer Needs) comes from Monty Python's "Life of Brian" --

Always look on the bright side of death

Rick Fliehr is a classy guy outside the ring. Not an ignorant cracker at all. He is also richer than King Farouk, since his dad invented the felt-tip pen, or so I'm told. USM could do far worse than to bring him in as interim.

After viewing Boogy Man's website in Referee's post, I'd say he could boogie us into SACS accreditation faster than you can say "When you're in the ring, fellas, retend you're world class, fellas. The wrestiling fans will love it!"

Now THAT's some economic development...Flair pens for all!
