Holiday Break Concern
Permalink Closed

The IHL isn't meeting again until January, the students will soon be home for their semester break and I'm concerned that Thames will luck out with a lapse in coverage on this critical subject.  Under EAGLETALK, one poster stressed his concerns that the same person who allowed this probation to occur on his watch in the first place is being given the responsibility to fix it.  I agree.  What plans are being made to keep this on the top of everyone's minds so that we don't slip into complacency like we did during the summer break?

Those of us who haven't, can write letters to the CL, HA and IHL.  What else can be done?  While this board is wonderful, it doesn't solve our problems.

I just read Amy Young's post on the AAUP Investigation, so that helps but we still need to keep up with a full court press.

Who wants to write an op ed?

It's not a course of action for contributors who wish to remain anonymous, but it would help to keep the issue visible in the newspapers.

Would they take a whole piece, not just a letter to the editor?

Many newspapers publish locally produced op eds.

The Greenville News, a Gannett newspaper, runs a lot of op eds that originated locally or within the state.

The Editorial Page editor of the Hat Am would be the one to ask.

Here's a concern.  I hope the faculty isn't greeted upon its return from the holidays by President Angeline Dvorak,  and I'm only being half facetious here.   I have no idea whether Klumb was a co-conspirator in the often discussed plot to have Angie succeed Shelboo.  If he was, with the clock ticking on his IHL presidency and Shelby up to his a$$ in alligators,  this is probably his only opportunity to make something happen.  That said,  based on comments being reported in the media, I feel there are enough sentient members of the board to block any such  attempt. Even so, I'm breaking into a cold sweat just thinking about it.

no way.

that would be so far over the top that even the least militant faculty members would not stand for it.

See, there's someone who doesn't think I'm delusional!

I think there are small things that can be done over the break. Those who are "in the know" can begin to investigate or point out the consequences of being on probation for certain accredited programs. At the faculty senate meeting, it was announced that the other accrediting agencies will have to be notified about probation status. Nursing is quite worried, they seem to be on the edge and they fear that the announcement of SACS probation will automatically mean another onsite visit which might mean LOSS OF ACCREDITATION FOR NURSING. Are there other consequences of probation?

I will be working over the break because Dr. Exline is laying a lot of work on Academic Council. In addition to General Education Curriculum assessment, she wants us to do program reviews and evaluate undergraduate faculty credential status. This kind of work will be from scratch, meaning we must come up with criteria and then come up with a plan to collect the information, then evaluate it, and then send it to who needs to get that information. Almost everyone on AC is already on two standing committees. I just don't see how this small group can do all of this extra service work (which of course means we get no "points" for our FAR). Other folks who are also getting extra work like me might think about getting together over the break and confer. I must say I am quite resentful of the remark from Shelby Thames, "I'll fix it" which is obviously a code for "exploit the faculty."

As already posted on this thread, or perhaps on others, letters to the editor of HA and CL are in order, too. I think they are very important.

But of course, this is a time for family and friends and good cheer. I will continue to post as I learn more.
