I think it is likely that they will keep some form of a university in place once USM falls apart. What programs do you think they will keep? Obviously the athletic dept. will be scrapped, but I could see them maintaining a shell of a university. Will they keep a polymer science operation?
This does not look good. My CV is ready and looking for a new home.
I've speculated before that Polymer Science--along with any other unit that's doing a bunch of grant-funded research--will be crated up and shipped to Starkville.
robert--if you look at SACS teach out portion of their documents--pertaining to the closing of an instituton--if USM lost its accreditation another accredited university could take over its operation. we could become MSU--Hattiesburg, or UM-Hattiesburg.
Of course, you're right about USM's Hattiesburg campus being taken over by MSU or Ole Miss.
I came up with the "crating" hypothesis because the IHL Board often acts as though it wants to bust USM down to regional university level, or below, where units focusing on graduate education and grant-funded researh seem out of place. And because MSU supposedly tried to stop Polymer Science from being offiically identified as an engineering programs, because it wanted to retain a monopoly on engineering programs.

When a college or university changes its name, new diplomas with the new name are normally made available to the alumni. My own school changed names and I was provided with a sparkling new diploma bearing the new name. I know one other person from another school who experienced the same thing. I will expect no less in the event USM is absorbed by some other institution.

If the new diplomas are from Mississippi State, let's insist that it be accompanied by a cow bell. If from Ole Miss, one of their controversial flags. But if push comes to shove, a discount on purchases made at Mississippi State's cheese store, or a permit to take my SUV with the Nitchampburg bumper sticker to Oxforfd and tailgate in the Grove
Let's hope a new diplolma, if issued, would come from Mississippi State. I want it from there because I know it is growing and is in the midst of a large construction program. They are working day and night on it. I know because I drove through their campus about midnight a while back and saw nothing but pickup trucks. LIke you'd see at a construction site.Nothing but ickup trucks in the dormitory parking lots. They must be doing lots of round-the-clock construction.

I'll bet the Gulf Park people wish they'd split from the Hattiesburg campus long ago and had their own administrators in place.
