At the H'burg American:

Schedule unclear for Thames' College Board appearance

By Kevin Walters

Session with Southern Miss leader on school's probation status will likely be handled in executive session; check Web site for updates throughout the day.

This story will be updated throughout the day

JACKSON – State College Board officials said they weren’t certain if University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames will appear before the panel today.

But if they do discuss the school‘s probationary status with an accrediting organization, the session is expected to be behind closed doors, said College Board spokeswoman Carol Mead.

Thames has said he was taken by surprise by the disclosure last week by SACS, and has blamed subordinates (emphasis added) for failing to alert him to the depth of SACS’ concern over the reporting process at Southern Miss.

Thames and his assistant, Joan Exline, also questioned why there was a four-year gap in recorded communication between Southern Miss and SACS. A conversation between the two entities resulted in a statement by Exline that in fact the gap in communication might have been normal.

Sorry about the link.  See Hattiesburg American web site:

University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Provost Jay Grimes said Wednesday that he had been asked at the “last minute” to fill President Shelby Thames’ seat at the state College Board

Grimes: SACS matter may not make College Board agenda

College Board members had a light agenda. Grimes said it is possible the probation matter won’t come up. If the matter isn’t taken up today, he said it might also not come up tomorrow when the panel is expected to focus attention for a full day on the search for a new commissioner of higher education.

Aww, you know. Light schedule. No point in getting all worked up about that teachers' college down south.

This is insane!  More evidence of the "conspiracy theory" put forth by some on this board?

From HA - "University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Provost Jay Grimes said Wednesday that he had been asked at the “last minute” to fill President Shelby Thames’ seat at the state College Board meeting."

A no-show by Thames... Do I smell a "low-speed chase" coming through the streets of Hattiesburg? Hope WDAM carries that one live.

"State law allows public bodies to meet in executive session when discussing personnel and a number of other matters, including pending or possible litigation."

Litigation? Whose sueing now - the current students or the alumni? Let's hope they don't discuss the probation matter in executive session under the pretext that it is a personnel matter.

Oh, but you know the Board will insist that probation is a personnel matter.

After all, aren't a lot of people saying that Shelby Thames should be fired for failing to handle accreditation?

They should enter executive session when discussing terminations or litigation; and exit executive session when discussing USM's SACS probation. The legislature has given us the right to KNOW.

Yup.  Reliable sources report that el Presidente was seen making the rounds in NO's red light district following the game.  Or maybe it was the French Quarter?  Whatever.  In either case,  one might surmise that  too many celebratory hurricanes went down the hatch.

A picture's worth a thousand words. Especially Seymour's pictures. Draw is a cartoon, Seymour!
