Robert Evans' letter:  http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041214/OPINION03/412140325/1014/OPINION

Another letter writer tired of hearing about athletics instead of academics:

From the editorial:

Thames has said he was misled by staff members who failed to tell him for two years that the university's accreditation was in jeopardy. He said he asked the right questions but got the wrong answers.

An age-old management saying is that leaders must "trust, but verify" everything. College Board members need to ask Thames why his inquiries about accreditation weren't followed with closer scrutiny.

BINGO!

The first two paragraphs of the editorial suggest that the HA is getting serious.

As an alum now residing many states away, this most recent news is just too much to take.  Can someone please take responsibility for sending a copy of this editorial to each member of the IHL ASAP?

It would probably have the greatest effect if sent by "an alum now residing many states away."  Seriously, us homefolks seem to be taken as dysfunctional whiners and crybabies.  Maybe an out-of-towner will be heeded.

If you know any takers, here's the link:  About the Board

About the Board

I accessd this hotlink provided by ram and discovered it contains the biography of all 12 members of the IHL. I leared from that site that three IHL members have USM connections of some type. I knew about Robin Robinson (B.S., USM, member of USM Alumni Association's Board of Directors and inductee into the USM Alumni Hall of Fame), and I knew about Robin Robinson (B.S., USM). But I didn't know that Ed Blakeslee has served as Adjunct Professor of Accounting at USM/Gulf Park. One might think that with these three IHL members USM's status would not be so tenuous. I also found it interesting that Scott Ross was formerly a Trustee for Mary Holmes College (the college that became defunct following loss of accreditation). He, of all board members, must know the serious consequences of accredation loss. With those four comprising one-quarter of the IHL membership, I fail to understand the board has seemed to look so unfavorably toward USM.

This link would be valuable as a new thread.

I'm a bit confused (no wisecracks about that being my normal state).  Are there two Robin Robinsons serving on the IHL, both USM grads?  Are they related?

Austin Eagle, the hotlink provided by ram shows only one Robin Robinson. Take off those rose colored glasses.

Governor Connally, good to see you're back among the living.  I must confess that I didn't view the IHL hotlink, just read the text which seemed to reference two Robin Robinsons.  It's well past sunset so I do need to take off these shades. All the better to watch the mighty Golden Eagles in the New Orleans Bowl tonight.  One more thing...I've wanted to discuss the second gunman on the grassy knoll theory with you for years.  Maybe we could get together for a cold sasparilla when you visit Austin. I'll have my people call your people.

John Conlee, Austin. Not John Connally. The John Conlee whose big hit was "Rose Colored Glasses." You Texas types know that. My spelling is about as bad as your vision!

Austin Eagle, your vision is much better than mine. I went into the holink posted by ram and saw that board member Virginia Newton has a USM master's degre. It was One Quarter, No Quarter who must have picked that up wrong. Maybe we all should have our eyes examined. Maybe we can find a good eye doctor who will examine three pairs of eyes for the price of two? Enjoy the game. I'm watching it now on ESPN. Current the score is USM 14 North Texas 0

You had me there for a min.  John Conlee is one of my all time favs in CW music, although I like "Common Man" better than "Rose Colored Glasses."  Sorta along the line of Aaron Tippin's "Working Man's Ph.D." that was a hit a few years ago.  Fire Shelby now and save USM... and turn on Johnny Paycheck's "Take this job and shove it."

While we're on music, maybe someone should point out the Dixie Stringer in the H-A (no relation to Gary, I assume), that USM has a School of Music that offers degrees to people who get credit for band and "glee club." Of course, that might do more harm than good. . .

HA finally comes out aggressively with a first rate editorial!  SFT has so many stories working now that he can't keep them all straight.

This editorial can best be described as a blistering indictment of the USM leadership and it's lack of focus on a fundamental component of any university.

The black eye that USM has had is now starting to move north, to the IHL.  They are now in a very serious situation - do they continue to "back their guy", or cut their losses?

It is my hope that the faculty at USM does not "lead the charge" to get rid of SFT, but rather the alumni, parents, community, and legislature take the lead on this one.  If the faculty are in the lead, then they will be demonized again and their concerns will be dismissed.  If the IHL still backs him after the Dec. meeting, then the die is cast - SFT will continue to lead USM for the foreseeable future.  If that is the case, the school is doomed.

Glad to know there's another C&W fan on board. For awhile I thought I was the only one. Like no other genre of music, every human emotion is expessed is C&W.
