All this talk about advertising and recruiting reminds me. Do we still have an affirmative action officer or an EEOC office?

I believe we do. If memory serves, Thames left it up to the Faculty Senate to decide whether or not to "reap the benefits/savings" of reorganizing the EEOC/AA office. They wisely chose to keep Becky Woodrick and, as far as I know, her office still exists.
So, this position was posted back in November? I'm confused here...I thought that they just decided to create this position. Someone help me out!"
Hmmm. Let's see. You don't think the administration would back-date, do you? Remember that after the enrollment story hit the papers on Dec. 5, 2003, the administration claimed a few spinning days later that it had been quietly working its own investigation since early November? Here's the snip:
HA, Dec. 11, 2003 USM enrollment numbers wrong; human error blamed
...Southern Miss officials last week countered that their numbers were correct and that the school met College Board guidelines. In a statement issued Wednesday, the university said officials had been looking into discrepancies since early November.
"The minute I found out something was amiss, I started my own investigation," Hudson said. "I didn't want to say anything about it until I knew for sure." ...
So now we learn that administration has been planning on hiring an assessment director all along. What a surprise!
HA, Dec. 14, 2004 USM hires director to aid accreditation efforts
...Exline said in a prepared statement that the position was posted and several candidates interviewed in November.
“I was looking for someone with experience in program evaluation and survey research who also had superb organization skills and could hit the ground running at Southern Miss,” Exline said...

But what about SACS experience? Isn't that's what's needed? God forbid we should hire one of those expert consultants Invictus mentioned, somebody FROM OUTSIDE who would set Thames' house of horrors in order. But Thames will never let that happen. The assessment "expert" must be someone he can control. Who? Joy Hamilton. SACS expert? Seems unlikely. Her previous position, according to the 2003 campus directory, was manager of the Center for Community Health, where she reported to none other than Joan Exline, at that time director of the Center.
So Exline has her assistant back again. Thames has someone he can crack a whip over. USM's prospects look bleaker each day.

Let's see....... no one told Thames about any SACS problems. A bit of imagination: could it be because they were afraid to?
Now, can Hamilton tell her boss Exline the sordid truth? Which of course assumes she can discern it.

Yes, it was advertised on the HR website at least 4-6 weeks ago. I wish I had thought to capture a screen shot of the posting, particularly to compare how closely aligned the position qualifications are to those of Ms. Hamilton.

I assume the Director of Assessment position is intended to be an ongoing administrative function, not just a temporary job tied to the SACS issue.
USM really should get somebody from the SACS Consulting Network. It's common knowledge among schools that have had "issues" with institutional effectiveness that colleges need to do this when getting a follow-up or monitoring report together. Part of it is to provide the expert guidance & part of it is to demonstrate "seriousness" to SACS. If Thames' pride prevents him from taking this very simple step, he's making a big mistake & a very avoidable one.
This position may have been in preparation for the upcoming SACS review in 2006. Remember Exline presented her plans and committee organization for this SACS review back in July at the PUC meeting. At that time no one mentioned the 1995 SACS review or the fact that we were not in compliance.
So I do not agree with Robert Campbell’s take that SFT knew the hammer will fall and was preparing for it back in November.

Isn't it strange that Shelbo or Exline didn't mention the intended hiring when the SACS news broke....something like "We're ahead of the curve on this issue - we realized the problem last month when we were proactive in posting the position for an individual to lead the effort."
I think it the new position was another effort to bloat the administration (every administrator needs someone to boss) that became serendipity when the SAC debacle came to light.
