Spin? March On The Dome? How bad.....?
Permalink Closed

I just posted another topic, "Spin?" and then read the topic "MARCH ON THE DOME" posted last night.   Both posts are about the need for the faculty to speak out.  I gues the main problem is fear of losing one's job and fear of being the only person to speak.  Those are powerful motivators.

Losing accreditation could also negatively impact one's job, and  limit one's audience should he choose to speak.

How bad does it have to get?

There were plenty of faculty among those who rallied against Thames more than once at the Dome last year. Some were quite vocal in their sentiments. As far as I know, no faculty lost their jobs because of this, although many have chosen to leave. (I was one.)

Maybe not fired, but at least Shelby's most vocal opponents was recently denied tenure.

Being denied tenure comes pretty darn close to being fired.

I presume you meant to write "...at least one of Shelby's most vocal opponents..."?

Denied tenure? On what grounds? Will there be a lawsuit?

Untenured faculty do have to be on particularly good behavior. For example, shouting anti-Thames slogans through a megaphone on the steps of the Dome might not be the best idea.

Of course, as Shelby tried to show us with Professors Glamser and Stringer, even tenure isn't impregnable armour. The only way to show HIM a thing or two is for EVERYONE to stand up against him TOGETHER. Doing it alone is both dangerous and ineffective.

Oh dear, must we become even more "efficient, effective, and innovative" than the Master Himself in order to overwhelm Him?

At what level did the tenure denial occur? Departmental? College Personnel Committee? Dean? University Personnel Committee? Provost? President? Were reviews conducted at all of those levels? Being denied tenure is not, by itself, inappropriate. Not receiving appropriate reviews at all levels is. It should not be expected that all faculty members will receive tenure.
