My mother visited campus last week, and she said that the banners reminded her of Third-Reich propaganda images. She thought they were silly, and that it was even more silly that USM was preaching to the choir, wasting money promoting USM to residents of H'burg, when the money could be better spent on academics.

FS, good to "see" you. I made a "stealth" visit to the 'burg myself over the holiday, and I thought the banner looked ridiculous. What a waste of money at a university that can't even make good on its contracts with incoming faculty members.

????
How does hanging a banner appeal to the non-traditional student? Are there just scads of non-trads driving down Hwy 49 thinking "I wonder where I might go back to school to get that college degree...wait a minute...I never noticed that university right over there!"
Uh, yeah...well, I started college as a non-traditional student, and, of all the factors I considered, "nationalistic" school banners wasn't one of them.
Seeing the advertisements done in a way that has never been done before (a la the huge banner on Panhellnic) gives off that wow effect.
The goal of advertisement is to find a way to stand out and to do things that nobody else is doing.
The banners definitely do that. Argue for or against it until you are blue in the face, but the fact is, they are advertising to the non-traditional student. And I am sure that if you take a look at the enrollment classification numbers in the fall, it will be working.
And yes, there are 'scads' of non-traditional students that do not know about everything that southern miss has to offer. The ads are not designed to convince them to consider USM as a school to go to when they magically decide to go get an education, its designed to convince them to go get their education at USM.

Again, where are the numbers to support this? LSM, is this you???
As I said before, what a WASTE of money...I'm sure the library would like to have had that $4000 to "wow" the faculty, staff, and students with more books and journal subscriptions.

Dear Sir or Madam:
The banners to which you refer were my own idea. It was astute of your dear Mother to note the similarity to my earlier efforts. She is to be commended for her sense of history. Thank you so much for the recognition.

Lisa, dear, it's perfectly fine to hide behind a nom d'aplomb of a different gender, but you need to work on playing a little more "close to the vest." Your bias is showing.
What a way to bend an argument, to put words in someone else's mouth. She didn't say that marketing is "bad," just that stupid plastic banners on the sides of dorms are, well, STUPID, and the money could be better spent elsewhere. It's sad when a university has to spend PR dollars in the very town it is situated to recruit "non-traditional students." Your argument is total bunk.
If recruiting NTStudents was the whole objective of the banner campaign, then someone doesn't know much about NTStudents.

Truth, it is worst than that. The $4000 is just to take this one DOWN. Think of the cost of to make and mount the dang thing. How may books could the library buy for that amount?

having a little experience in this type work, i suggest that the cost is somewhat overstated....
most cases the put and take down is included in the installation (these are "temporary" products), i would also guess the $4k is for all signs involved
if the number ms mader is quoting for the take down of one sign is correct she certainly is using her famous mader math
Did not William Carey enroll additional students via TV and print media and without posting banners? Arguments that the banners will increase enrollment are misleading. Money would have been better placed in TV/print ads outside the "burg" and additional money could have been given to our library.

Herr Goebbels: Those banners are not reincarnations of your fiendish propaganda. Quite the opposite is true. Those banners are American - red, white & blue to the core. The blonde with the welding torch emblazoned on the 53-foot high banner, for example, depicts Rosie the Riveteer who was seen in those patriotic World War II posters.

You may tell your mother they are not Third-Reich propaganda images. The blonde with the welding torch emblazoned on the 53-foot high banner commemorates Rosie the Riveteer as was depicted in patriotic World War II posters. If you mom recalls the Third-Reich banners, she will surely recall Rosie the Riveteer.

I'm sorry you called my attention to that site, Googler. But I won't think ill of you for doing so. Here is my favorite line from that press release: "Nitchampburg will be unlike any place in the college basketball world." Dang. NitWitchampburg. Nice name.

I predict that the local restaurants will now begin serving NITCHAMPBUGERS - licensed by USM, of course.
"Krebbs believes the banner actually helps improve the looks of the building. And he also suggests that if the banner had photos of the sorority presidents or members, there wouldn't be so many hard feelings from students."
What a rodentulous statement. If I were a sorority member or president of a sorority, I'd take offense. Maybe he was representing some of Shelby's own cue cards.

How tasteful! Reminds me of one of them them juke box dittys:
I'm gonna' hire a wino, to decorate our home, So you can feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam. When you and your friends get off from work, and have a powerful thirst. There won't be any reason, why you can't stop off here first.
"I'm gonna' hire a wino to decorate our home, So you'll feel more at ease here, and you won't have to roam. We'll take out the dining room table, and put a bar along that wall. And a neon sign, to point the way, to our bathroom down the hall.

Gag. Sounds like either a concentration camp or an Alps resort for lice eggs. Either way, it's hard to pronounce and makes no sense, unless you can remember all the way back to '87.
I am of the conclusion that you are all a bunch of negative know-nothing ****s with little more to do than sit around and bitch about things out of your control like a bunch of old hens in a sewing circle.
Might as well put you guys in a room, give you some yarn, and let you guys knit the worlds largest USM sweater.
