U. Missouri Chancellor Resigns - sounds familiar

Its in the Chronicle: http://chronicle.com/daily/2004/12/2004120604n.htm

For non-subscribers, here are some excerpts:

"The chancellor of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, who received no-confidence votes from several faculty groups in recent weeks, announced on Friday that she was resigning."

". . . she presented an ambitious strategic plan that she referred to as the university's "transformation" (The Chronicle, November 1, 2002)."

"She had an enormous PR campaign here," said Alfred F. Esser, a professor of biological sciences. "But when you looked, there wasn't anything there."

". . . critics claim that Ms. Gilliland's initiatives had an "anti-intellectual" tone and often put concerns of local business leaders over those of faculty members."

"I think she did a good job with the business community, but this is an educational institution," said James R. Durig, a chemistry professor and the chairman of the faculty group of the College of Arts and Sciences. "I think she ignored the faculty here."

"Among the reasons behind the negative vote, Mr. Durig listed the chancellor's decisions to give faculty raises in only some departments, to cut faculty positions in arts and sciences, and to build a costly new health-sciences building, which he said was "essentially a 5 percent tax on academics." Several other faculty groups and the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors also recently announced that they no longer supported Ms. Gilliland."

But it is likely that the passage of time alone would not have done it.

That independent student newspaper is called the University News. Looks like things might have gotten tough out there.

This was the sort of article that USM Sympathizer would shoot off to all the IHL Board members and legislators.  USM Sympathizer, you are missed.

Sounds like the University of Missouri at Kansas City is definitely not the place to send people for an administrative sabbitical.

Angie D should have demanded a raise!

Isn't that strange syntax:  "former friend" ??  Wonder if the friend only became "former" after the good chancellor was axed?  I'm sure that U of Missouri faculty and staff have similar stories to share as those at Southern Mess.

In an e-mail message sent to university staff and faculty members, the chancellor, Martha W. Gilliland, wrote that it was best for the campus's future "to move forward without such distraction."

There's that administrative mantra again!
