"THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI is involving its campus community as it moves toward selecting the crucial position of provost. The inclusiveness and open approach is exactly right and is a study in contrasts to the selection of the university president.

The first to make the acquaintance of USM was Gary Olson, 53, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Illinois State University. He visited the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses this week.

He met separately Wednesday with faculty and staff members.

Olson said he believes in an open approach, and including staff, students and faculty in committees and in making plans.

"One of the things I've championed is opening up our processes as widely as possible," Olson said.

A champion of institutional transparency would be positive for the university and should be looked at closely."

The really important contrast the HA missed is the way this president selects VP's and a provost as compared to the previous president. She clearly understands higher education.

Yes she does.  SFT didn't take long to select his team.  Do you remember how SFT hit the ground running.....in the wrong direction?smile
