The decision to go after a marketable coach and assistants and to provide an adequate recruiting budget is going to be expensive. The increase in the football budget is likely to be a million or more dollars. One can't help but wonder where the money will come from year after year. Ideally, the plan is for greater ticket sales and better bowl games with bigger payoffs. A bigger issue is the impact on money available for non athletic areas from tapped out donors. Time will tell.
We have been through this before but what I am seeing now is a new breed of Southern Miss fans that really are committed to going to the next level. I just moved back home after being in self imposed exile in Georgia (go Atlantamafia.com) for years and I was thrilled to see the tailgating at the level it is. Our fans seem to have higher expectations and that is not a bad thing. I believe that we can do better. I drove back to Jackson after the Rice and Memphis game and did not talk all the way home. I was not a happy eagle fan. I'll get my season tickets upgraded next year and "hope springs eternal". I like the idea of a coach with a wide open offensive attack. I think we have a couple of good young quarterbacks and am already getting excited about next year. Belhaven Eagle

belhaven eagle, I can tell that you are an enthusiastic Golden Eagle fan, so I accessed the website you mentioned in your posting - www.Atlantamafia.com -where I saw the following statement dated August 31, 2007: ""We are extremely pleased that our season ticket numbers hit an all-time high," Giannini said. The item goes on to say that the continued success of Head Coach Jeff Bower's team is one of the major reasons ticket sales continue to climb . . . . . The Golden Eagles are one of just five teams in the nation that have collected winning seasons in each of the last 13 seasons.
In view of this, was the Atlanta Mafia disappointed or surprised when it was announced that Jeff Bower would no longer be head football coach at USM?
Don't know! I think it was probably a mixed bag. Nearly all Atlanta Mafia folks loved Jeff. His Dad still lived north of Atlanta (He died 3 years ago) and we were all ecstatic when we beat Georgia several years ago. On the other hand, word is that many Georgia Eagles were not happy and lots of money may be coming from them. Wish my friend and classmate, The Coach, Jeff Bower, many blessings. Hope he and his family claim the blessings of life. Belhaveneagle

Yes, I personally was disappointed and angered over this decision I am the co-owner of AtlantaMafia.com. I was not surpirsed however. I sent a letter to both Dr. Saunders and Richard Giannini over my displeasure. What annoyed me was Coach Bower has asked for more money for assistant coaches, not himself and an increased recruiting budget since he has been at USM. If it wasnt available then, it's interesting it is available now. You cant be successful without the tools. It appears they are going to provide Coach Fedora with the tools. Yes, the founding members of the Atlanta Mafia, the Roswell Gang and the larger money supporters from Georgia are not happy about this move.
I can't speak for the alums and fans in Atlanta that follow USM athletics, but I know many are upset over it, many are OK, and some don't care.

This is a correct statement. I would say the main money contributors from Georgia will not be contributing to USM athletics.
I would still say our fan base is divided but I think most of our fans will still be at the games to see the new staff and how the team performs. Most of the Nut Lines posters are happy to ecstatic with the change. The bottom line is what happened has happened. The ones that were upset with the previous staff have come back and many of the ones that are not happy with the change will come back when the administration changes.
Am curious as to how many read the column by Mark Schlabach on ESPN.com rating the college coaching changes. It appeared in mid-December and is still available in the ESPN archives. He gave USM an 'F' on the process and a 'D' on the overall decision. Pretty interesting especially when read along side the changes at Houston, Michigan, Baylor, etc.
