Fear not. People are working on a number of fronts behind the scenes. The apparent lull you see comes from the fact that the 200+ faculty members who have left the university over the past two years included a number of senior AAUP members who were very active in the organization (e.g., Polk, Malone, Glamser, Stringer, Kimber Wilson). Also, many people fell behind in their professional work as the result of the disruptions last year and are playing catch up this fall. It is important that AAUP members volunteer to take up some of the slack and that new faculty members join AAUP. Contact Amy Young to find out how you can help.
What is going on with the AAUP chapter this semester? A couple of meetings have been held (including one in which Dean Pood established his culpability in the matter of the Diane Stevenson classroom invasion), and Amy Young gets quoted in a HA article now and then. But where are the position statements, press releases, actions plans, email messages to faculty about the latest outrages of the Thames tyranny, etc. etc.? The website home page dates back to before summer; what's that about? Perhaps much is happening "behind the scenes," but interested observers may be forgiven for thinking that the tyranny has effectively stuffed AAUP down a rabbit hole.
Here's a thought: Petition the national organization for an investigation of the unabated pattern of disregard for shared governance practices. Isn't the evidence overwhelming at this point?
there's an attorney with a long history at USM who is looking at all of this too and would like opinions, ideas etc. about what he/she could do to take this to the national presses.

Could there be an agreed upon email address that could serve as a middleperson where this attorney could discuss issues with those who email.
Thank you Andrea. Folks, we are the good gals/guys - please respond so we can send a unified message to those who control. We have a person onboard who is more than willing to represent our concerns.
Here's a suggestion for how to open another front.
Could we, through the AAUP or FS, organize a CoAL faculty confidence/no confidence vote on Elliot Pood? If this could be done, would it be a viable tactic? I mean, the guys strikes almost everyone willing to discuss him as a freaking menace, and yet it is entirely possible that he is among the candidates for provost. Can we act assertively, now?
In department and FS meetings I've been to lately, almost every issue discussed eventually comes down to how people don't trust the CoAL dean, don't expect him to tell the truth, can't really predict what he going to do next, or how he's going to manipulate and punish this department or that prof, etc. ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
This is what it means for a faculty to not have confidence, isn't it? Is there a medium through which this feeling can be registered?

Confidence votes are typically organized through the recognized representative faculty bodies -- in USM's case, the Faculty Senate. However, singling out a dean will almost certainly be resisted by a significant minority, if not the majority, of senators. On the other hand, the AAUP might well sanction Pood on governance-related grounds and/or his ridiculous effort to initiate termination proceedings against Polk, a tenured professor, and/or his authorization of administrative invasion of Dr. Stevenson's class. This might be accomplished simply by petitioning Dr. Young for a meeting of the chapter and putting a resolution of sanction before the membership. I wouldn't rule out, however, a spontaneous movement of the faculty within the college to organize and execute a confidence ballot; this might well be the best approach, coming directly from those faculty who know Pood best.
Should it done? Yes. It's well past time to create some friction. The current state of affairs is intolerable. Change takes friction, and friction means controversy. Go for it.

In fact, the Faculty Senate discussed this matter at length at the 11/12 meeting. There was no voice raised in support of Pood. Rather, a resolution is being drafted, and it was unanimously agreed to hold a special meeting to vote on the resolution.
FYI: the Faculty Senate does extend gallery privileges.

Well after two and a half years, we finally have a definition for economic development...the commercialization of technology. Now everyone can finally get on the same page.

All this time, we've been searching for an obscure definition of economic development that would allow us to claim that Southern Miss is a unique and pioneering farce in a newly evolving discipline. The "commercialization of technology"? Wow, certainly no university has thought of that angle before.

Tinctoris,
Is there anything new to report on this? Is the Faculty Senate likely to take action against Pood?

Actually, the meeting is TODAY, Wednesday, December 8, at 4 p.m. in FGH 113. It is my understanding that FGH = the old home ec building, now college of health, at the corner of Pearl and Sunset, next to the plaza between Cook and McCain libraries, but I am asking Amy Young or some other responsible soul to confirm that information on this board.

Just for the record-- that's the AAUP meeting. I was referring to the Faculty Senate meeting, which is Thursday, 5:00, Cook Library 123. I hope many of us can get to both meetings.

Oh duh, you're right. Argh! It always bothers me when I don't read something properly, since that's my job. Thanks for the clarification, Tinctoris.
