The Southern Miss community has been plagued in recent days with fake e-mails pretending to be from an official source.
These e-mails and attachments contain viruses and should be deleted immediately. The e-mail is a fake notice about your computer being sent "a huge amount of spam during this week." It goes on to say that the computer in question has been compromised and contains a Trojan proxy server. You are then instructed to open an attachment that will "clean" your computer and "keep it safe."
The attachment contains a virus that can cause damage to your files.
The e-mail is then signed the "usm.edu team" or some variation of that. These e-mails are always fake. iTech does not send out notices for excessive SPAM and will generally notify you in person in case of a problem.
