From USMmail:

Fake E-mails Plaguing Campus

The Southern Miss community has been plagued in recent days with fake e-mails pretending to be from an official source.

These e-mails and attachments contain viruses and should be deleted immediately.
The e-mail is a fake notice about your computer being sent "a huge amount of spam during this week." It goes on to say that the computer in question has been compromised and contains a Trojan proxy server. You are then instructed to open an attachment that will "clean" your computer and "keep it safe."

The attachment contains a virus that can cause damage to your files.

The e-mail is then signed the "usm.edu team" or some variation of that. These e-mails are always fake. iTech does not send out notices for excessive SPAM and will generally notify you in person in case of a problem.

I know it isn't much consolation, but my district gets that sort of crap as well.

Someone has way to much time on their hands. My thought process is call itech first if you think it might be on the up and up , otherwise just delete.
