A reply and a plea to TOM PAINE
Permalink Closed

Tom, you were a great judge, and I myself even voted for you. However, taking retribution against Thames because you were not appointed chair of the Criminal Justice Department has lowered yourself.

I do not want to encourage any more public activity on your part, but this is an anonymous board. At the very least, you should have used an anonymous name to post your plea to oust Thames. That way you would not be embarrassing the department so much. As it is now, copies of your post and several of the replies to it, are circulating on campus. I myself have had to remove seven copies from the walls of Walker Science over the last few days.

I am shocked by how many USM employees—who do not get what they want and who feel they are all the "best" person for employment—feel they have to seek some kind of retribution when other administrative officials feel there are better people out there. I am even more shocked that you, Tom Paine, turned out to be one of them.

You were a great judge Tom, and that is why I voted for you. However, there is a large distinction between a city judge and an academic chair in a department that is somewhat scientific and that is trying to increase its scientific activity. Please do not be a sore loser. You are not only demeaning yourself; you are showing the other faculty and students that the decision to find someone else was the right decision.

I don't have any idea what this post is referring to, but you are wrong in stating that this is an "anonymous" board.  Board posters choose whether or not they will remain anonymous (and if they choose to "out" themselves, they are prepared to take whatever flak they get).  There are no rules about anonymity on this board.

"Tom, you were a great judge, and I myself even voted for you. However, taking retribution against Thames because you were not appointed chair of the Criminal Justice Department has lowered yourself...."

I don't know what or whom you're talking about, my friend.  This "Tom Paine" is a USM patriot who has "judged" only that the presidency of Shelby Thames is toxic to the general welfare of the USM community, and who urges all patriots of like mind to speak it to each and every member of the IHL -- again and again.  I am not, never have been, and never will be associated with the Criminal Justice Department.

My motivation is not ulterior, but simply this: The word trickling out from the board is that since the president was put on a short leash in the aftermath of the Glamser/Stringer debacle, things have "settled down" at USM, criticism has dissipated, and Thames is now on "good terms" with faculty.  The proof?  "No one is telling us otherwise."  Chalk this up as further evidence of a board conspiracy to destroy USM and remain silent, if you like, but this patriot prefers to make what noise he can with what voice he has.  I've already factored the price of 12 stamps into my weekly budget.  I urge the same from everyone who thinks there is still hope for USM.

Now there's the Tom Paine I absolutely admire. Don't get me wrong, I admire the historical figure as well. But,it was good to hear your response.
