LETTERS Professors at the University of Southern Mississippi have left by the hundreds for better-paying jobs or opportunities. Prior to this fall, USM professors had received one 2 percent raise in the previous five years.
The proponents of the bond issue claim we have to help save USM. Surely the bond issue is to raise professors' salaries and stop the flight.
But no - the bond issue is to improve athletic facilities.
They call this a tourism tax. I would like to point out we already have a tourism tax. It goes to the "successful" convention center.
Only in a politician's mind does a business require $2 million in taxpayer dollars per year and is considered a success.
Maybe the convention center should adopt USM athletics and share the 2 percent tourism tax we are already paying.
