A new center at the University of Southern Mississippi will focus on black history, cultural and social contributions, and university officials hope to soon offer a major and minor in black studies.
The Southern Miss Center for Black Studies has hit the ground running, director Curtis Austin said, with full support from the university's administration....
Black Studies? I don't know anyone who is black *or* white. But I know plenty of people who are African-American and European-American. Is black the new black?
If Curtis Austin wants to call it Black Studies, that should be his privilege -- maybe he just finds A-A too cumbersome. Would appreciate hearing his comments on that.
No surprise that Truth and I don't agree on this but I do NOT consider myself a "European-American" -- parts of my family have been here since the 1600's and that surely should be long enough to lose any hyphens. ;)

I object to "black" and "white" purely for linguistic reasons...I have never seen anyone whose skin color is black...nor have I seen anyone with white skin color. Brown and browner would be more appropriate, IMHO. And, really, when you get down to it, aren't all of the divisions more cultural in nature than pigment-related anyway?
I find AA and EA cumbersome, too, though more factually correct. Anyone have other suggestions?
black and white each have one syllable. so, based on ease of response effort i vote for those. george carlin might agree based on his discussion of shell shock to ptsd.
